So despite the Governments trying to convince us that things are better these days and the economy is turning around we out here in the real world know better. yesterday at work my compnay for the last 10 weeks has been running the workshare program. For those unfamiliar with this program basically everyone works 32 hours a week so 4 days and collects for the fifth. It's good in that you can collect indefinetely but of course you do lose some money the state of RI only has 2 people who run this department (so they say) and people have not goten a fucking dime yet, we have called the Senator's offices as well as gone to a local news station and nothing yet. yesterday the company announced it wioll now be going on 3 days a week with the other 2 days being just us supervisors (we have not had time off yet).
Needless to say this did not go over well peaople cannot afford to pay there mortgage and are even struggling eating.
A 55 year old woman that I have worked with for 10 years broke down into tears in my arms in my office because they are already 2 months behind on their mortgage. I recently sold a property my grandfather left me and loaned her a mortgage payment. She is one of many in my place with these issues one of millions across the country. It was a tough day. So I get in my car and put on the local sports station and heave to hear about the NFL work stoppage.
I shut it off before I hit something. I am sick and tired of this bullshit. These assholes are millionaires and billionaires. I cannot possible feel bad for them. They have the stones to act as if they are going without They complain of healthcare. Are you fucking kidding me? I know people who pay $200 a week for healthcare. Why don't you take some of your millions and invest in your future rather than buying 5 million dollar homes? Even the "non superstars make over six figures a year. Don't know what the average income is out here on Lit but safe to say 6 figures is more than most of us make.
I am (was) a die hard football fan. patriots first since 1978 but in general will watch any football game televised from 12-12 on sundays all three games and all the shows but you know something>? No more. If they resolve this tomorrow I will not buy another ticket, t-shirt, or watch another game. I am fucking done. I don't understand how anyone can sympathise with these people and as far as the void left by football? well maybe I'll devote some more time to my writing and defenitely spend some time doing things with my family. I am going to put up similiar comments on NFL.com and ESPN.com I have seen other people post comments like mine as well. I hope more do and I hope more mean it when they say they are done. I think every NFL player and owner should be made to wash some floors or flip some burgers for a couple of months then go live in a shelter for a week then come back and cry about your platry salary and lousy benefits.
In closing I would like to extend my middle finger to Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew brees especially who have the audacity to sue the corporation that has made them millionaires. I think every NFL player and owner should be made to wash some floors or flip some burgers for a couple of months then go live in a shelter for a week then come back and cry about your platry salary and lousy benefits. Fuck all of them.

Not a fan of football players. Over here they are basically a crime spree on their own. Sports contributes nothing to humanity. Basically all it is is a cult of celebrity. Shoot em all I say. We won't miss them. Not a fan of other sport either and I think the Olympics is public wanking for the physically gifted.

I don't believe most of that and I certainly don't believe you understand what the issues are with the NFL and the players.
And one thing I'll always have trouble understanding is why people believe that all athletes are millionaires and that millionaires don't deserve the same rights as everyone else.

Are you kidding? They have more rights than we do? Can you routinely break the law and get away with it? when was the last time your company gave a million dollar signing bonus to you. Also try reading what i wrote the minimum is 6 figures. you not your company are responsible tp pay your bills and invest in your future these guys make a fortune and expect to never have to pay for anything
Seeing your AV I can understnad where you come from. Ohio State is a top college football school full of potential millionaires who have their tests taken by other students.
You want to disagree with my basic statemnt go for it but that comment of Millionaires should have the rights we do? Are you fucking kidding me? Go outside your bubble and look at the real world. Better yet whip out a pistol and shoot someone and see how fast your locked up. No rights you must have partied with and sucked the cocks of the to many buckeyes if you believe what you are saying.

Here is how I imagine it:
I am a 23 year old man in very good physical condition and I have a college degree. I am offered a job which requires me to maintain my physical condition. I risk debilitating injuries and possible death every time I go to work. The physical stress of my job will result in long term brain damage which will appear in my 40's and gradually worsen. I will develop Parkinson's and Alzheimer's symptoms in my 50's.
Now the man asks me how much money I want and I have to decide what the job is worth.

No more. If they resolve this tomorrow I will not buy another ticket, t-shirt, or watch another game. I am fucking done.

Bullshit!! YOU, like everyone else, WILL BE BACK!

If the fans boycotted, then these owners might listen...until then, have fun paying your seat licenses, $10 beers, $5 pretzels and cheering for losing squads.....

Good way to put it.
Now try this. I am a young man in my early 20's. I am a police officer/fire fighter/soldier in the US army. any day I could be shot or crippled, anyday my job can put me in harms way and cause injuriies that could effect me into my later years.
What is my annual salary? far less than the NFL minimum.
Oh and by the way I risk injury to protect others lives not to play a kids game.

I don't watch sports to begin with. However with a newborn adopted son in the house I may be forced to change that habit.

In 10 years or more. God willing.

I've got time to vaccinate myself against meathead poisoning.

So basically this is an extention of the Wisconsin Wars. We look over at some guy who's got a union and who's bosses are forced to share the profits in a way that isn't completely one sided and we all (LJ included) bitch.

And they don't have more rights than us because their NFL players they have more rights than us because their rich. Once you pass X amount of money you can do what you want.

Jealousy. It's not a good look guys.

The golden rule. I am not jealous i just think it's time for some reality. and these people need to realize the average fan can barely suport their family and doesn't want to hear it anymore. this goes for the owners as well.

I don't bitch about unions forcing their rich bosses to pony up a fair share.

I do it at my business. I reward my employees for their productivity. Lavishly. Sure it costs me my shot at a solid gold yacht with its own heliport. Oh woe is me.

Much as I despise meatheads the problem here is the greedy bosses, not the players' unions. People like lovecraft68 are being tricked into hating the wrong group.

No one will spend $200 to watch you work for a couple of hours.

The man who stands on the rear bumper of a trash truck has a greater chance of being killed or crippled while on the job. He makes less than the soldier or the policeman.

Getting shot is not a job requirement for soldiers or policemen. It is a possibility and a risk. For a pro football player, several thousand blows to the head over his career is part of the job. It cannot be avoided. The consequences of the job cannot be avoided.

Whether it is a kids game or not, would you take several million dollars today in exchange for future brain damage?

Uh, you do realize that is was league owners who 1) chose to end the existing collective bargaining agreement and then 2) locked out the players, don't you?

Maybe not.

Someone, and I wont' say who, just comes off sounding like a cry baby.

I am going to put up similiar comments on NFL.com and ESPN.com I have seen other people post comments like mine as well.

That's because like you, they are also ignorant to the situation. The owners ended the current CBA because they felt they gave the players too much in the last one. And those millionaires you are giving the middle finger to - they made the owners billionaires and created a whole lot of jobs. The owners lockout will end several jobs in this economy. Fuck the owners.

Also, fuck (the now de-certified NFLPA) for telling prospective rookies to boycott the draft activities. These young men worked all their life for this moment. What a crock of shit.

Thank you.

I was a soldier, then I was a Deputy Sheriff. While I Deputy, I maintained an EMT certification (all done on my own time at my own expense, ditto for the bandages etc I carried). And earned a Bachelor's Degree, in Criminology. When/where I started, a married Deputy with 2 children qualified for welfare.

In the Army I got blown up a couple of times (mortar attacks), saw a lot of horrid things. As a Deputy, I had windows shot out of my moving patrol car, got hit with rocks etc from behind while on calls, confronted people with guns, knives, ball bats and every weird item you can think of. I have musculoskelatal (sp?) injuries from going down a flight of stairs with a spouse abuse suspect on top of me. Cracked ribs on numerous occasions, broken bones in my arms. Lost count of stitches, minor cuts and abrasions don't even register. Saw a lot more horrid things.

Overall, nothing unusual for any cop or soldier.

Of course, there are the mental problems, which everyone gets in his own manner. Survivor's guilt out the yang. Occasional flashbacks. Stress dreams (the other night I kept waking up thinking I'd heard someone jacking a round into a weapon, hurling myself to the floor. Got a few bruises left from that.)

While I can somewhat sympathize with the unheralded players, who don't get paid all that much considering the average of a 4-year career, I find it hard to sympathize with the guys with multi-million-dollar contracts with signing bonuses. And completely impossible to sympathize with the owners.

I think all of the NFL owners make easily ten times what the President of the United States does. And few of them do much of anything worthwhile with the money.

Anyone got stats on the NFL's "charity" efforts? I bet they come to less than 1% of income. And I would classify many of them as advertising rather than charity. Quite a few businesses spend more money advertising their "charity" work than they actually give to the charity.

The funniest part about the fight over money? They are just going to charge the fans more. It's not like the owner's are actually going to lose any money. Greedy bastards.

Ten times what the President makes is 4 million. I would certainly hope that the owner of an NFL team is making at least 4 million.
Of course most of them do many things besides own a team and much of what they do is worthwhile. But you don't want to hear that.
I also like how you admit not knowing the stats on their charity but quickly decide that it's small and only for advertising.
You're a fucking idiot.

Man I just know I'm bummed.

No free agent signings and there is even talk that some might not participate in the draft.

I know I'd be a lot more pissed at the owners if they sold me a PSL for a season that might not happen.

Owners and players are making way too much money.

Those dumb enough to waste their time and money on professional sports deserve to be ripped off...try reading a book. (without pictures)

This would make you one of the public employees who needs to learn that the taxpayers can no longer afford your healthcare and pension plans.

There are several threads about it. Go post this in one of those threads and see how it goes over.

If people with the skills to be soldier or deputy were as rare as competitive NFL players, soldiers and deputies would be better paid.

A person's pay does not depend upon the danger or risk. It's a matter of how many people can do the job, and then how many of those are willing to do it.

Owners and players are making way too much money.

But a season with replacement players would be awesome.

While I agree that NFL players, (and, for that matter, all sports figures and entertainers), are grossly overpaid, that isn't the current battle.
The issue right now is that not only did the owners opt out of the current agreement, (which had the leagues profits and popularity at an all time high), they at the same time gave up profit on tv deals to set up a war chest to fund them locking out the players. (Which has since been ruled illegal).
They then told the players they needed an extra BILLION dollars in their end of the agreement and completely refused to show any valid financial records to support it. The much talked about final offer the NFL owners made was to "meet the players in the middle."
That was going to be over a 300 million dollar paycut still with no supporting evidence. If I came to you and asked for half your pay, and you told me "NO" me taking a quarter of your pay is NOT a reasonable way to reach an agreement.
I don't know about you guys, but if my boss came to me and told me that even though company stock was through the roof and everyone was making money hand over fist he needed to cut my pay I would be screaming to my union rep as well.

That being said, there is some truth to the owners statements that costs are rising, anyone who's had to buy ANYTHING in the last couple years is aware of that. The issue is that the owners aren't showing any data as to how much their costs have risen and seem to seriously expect the players to just eat the loss.

It's insane.

I used to give two shits about NFL players until I read an article on ex-NFL players who were hurt and had no compensation. One was living in a car with his wife. One told of having broken ribs and being taped up and sent back on the field. I wish I knew where the article was. I read it at my brother's in some mens' magazine. Football is a brutal sport and from what I see the players are getting bigger every year. They take their life in their hands everytime they go on the field.
