N. Dakota May Seek Name Change

By DALE WETZEL, Associated Press Writer BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakotans can't move their state to warmer climes, but some hope a proposed name change will at least help the state seem a little less northern.

The Greater North Dakota Association, the state's chamber of commerce, is backing a proposal to cut the state's name to "Dakota." Supporters insist the plan would help alter the state's image as a frigid, treeless prairie. "People have such an instant thing about how North Dakota is cold and snowy and flat,'' said former Gov. Ed Schafer." We're not going to change that overnight. But (a name change) would get a lot of attention. Personally, I think it would be fun.

''Some state officials worry the plan would subject North Dakota to national ridicule - which is what happened in 1989 when the Legislature defeated a proposal to drop the 'North.'

Gov. John Hoeven said he was willing to listen to arguments from advocates of the idea but thought North Dakota's name worked well. "I'm more focused in getting out there and talking about all the wonderful things we have here, whether it's quality of work force, quality environment, great tourism, great education," he said.

To change names, officials would have to alter the state constitution and the federal Enabling Act, which split the Dakota Territory into the states of North Dakota and South Dakota in 1889. Katherine Satrom, a Bismarck travel agency owner and leading advocate of the name change, called the proposal "a serious economic development initiative, which could have far-ranging benefits to our state's future.''

But Lee Peterson, the governor's economic development director, didn't believe the name was a major factor in people's assumptions about North Dakota. "The problem with North Dakota is that no one knows about us,'' Peterson said.

This is very disturbing. Will this spread to the Carolinas? Will all the following decide to drop the 'new' from their names... York, Hampshire, Mexico, Jersey? I fear that they will drop the 'West' and then what would the people do if there are suddenly 2 Virginias? How will they find their way home? ;)

Seriously, have these folks taken into consideration the actual COST of making this change? I have seen the huge economic impact in several areas of the country where regions have switched area codes and businesses and individuals have had to change letterheads, business advertising, signage, phonebook listings, invoicing/billing materials, etc. Can you imagine how much time and expense would be involved in a change of this magnitude?

What do you think? Should they make the switch?

cool I almost posted that earlier. yes it would cost money. But stupid shit like changing states names or flags do. If the people want it then that's fine.

I think we need to do some other changing...

Oklahoma - North Texas,
Nebraska - North Kansas,
Missouri - North Arkansas (or vice versa)...

Gee this is fun.

Kansas - North Nowhere.

it just hit me that that would make Nebraska North, North Nowhere, so maybe I gotta go with South Nowhere...
