As a group The Monkees laid as much pipe as Led Zeppelin. Mickey Dolenz - by himself - might have topped Zep.
 
Then what happened?

After Kirscher recinded, they did play their own instruments but by then the show was over and the production team left taking all the creative talent with it. The boys continued to release albums and tour for many years, but had no real big talent to the songwriting or production. Nothing really catchy like the original tunes.

Probably the best testimony to what they could do by themselves was the album Justus which had them playing all the instruments and I believe writing and producing everything themselves promoing the album as a "See we can do it by ourselves" concept. Actually, it's not a bad album, but again nothing that memorable.
