I was remembering them today at VA. There is a group of people that have my respect. They are the ones who were at Guadacanal when the proverbial smack hit the fan. Left behind on that island to defend it as best they could without enough supplies, ammunition or weaponry, let alone enough men to the job. They won Guadacanal anyway. They overcame overwhelming odds, they suffered massive casualties, they were the epitome of what a US Marine is supposed to be.
I have to wonder, if it was me, if I were a marine on Guadacanal, would I have been equal to the task? Would I have been able to combat the enemy despite the lack of hope and no backup? Deserted by the Navy in the greatest hour of need? Would I be counted as one of the brave or would I have been a coward?
Some things must always be remembered. Guadacanal is one of them.
