Laurel, if it doesn't work this time... %#@&!

Should marijuana be legalized? I went to Google to see if I could find a poll as to the average person's opinion. The largest one I found was at the Mr. Poll website, and there were only around 120 people who took it.

Literotica has over 40,000 members... and I'd say we're all fairly indicative of society in general (maybe a bit more oversexed than some, but that's neither here nor there!). So let's see how people REALLY feel about this subject. VOTE NOW!

As far as my personal views go, I couldn't explain them better than Problem Child did in a thread awhile back (except to implore you to see "Traffic" if you haven't already):

The war on drugs is lost.

Drug use is climbing again (albeit slightly)

We tie up military forces guarding our borders, and raiding foreign drug labs.

We have one of (if not the highest) rate of incarceration per capita among industrialized nations, with about half the prisoners incarcerated on drug charges.

Our police departments have become swaggering, kevlar-suited hit squads that kick doors down and go in shooting.

We have made the drug industry highly profitable. So profitable that organized gangs who derive their money from drug sales control large sections of our inner cities.

Citizens found in possesion of marijuana have their homes and property unconstitutionally seized in drug raids. What has happened to the 4th amendment in this country?

We practice utter hypocrisy by glorifying alcohol and simultaneously villifying marijuana- the most benign drug on the planet.

We deny sick people a toke on a joint because of our misguided hypocracy.

We make illegal the growing of a crop that would supply us a great deal of useful fiber and oil, while at the same time saving our forests and giving farmers a new source of income because we believe we can change legislate human behavior.

We are stupid as fuck.

I hope it's okay to borrow this, PC, because I could never have said it better than you did!

Why not legalize ALL drugs?

Someone with sell them anyhow. I'm with the thought process that using drugs is OK, if used every once and a while. I, myself have used marijiuana, and LOVE it. BUT, I have the smarts not to use it on a daily basis.

BTW

I've seen "Traffic" and LOVE IT, despit it was trying to tell the audience not to use drugs AT ALL!!!!!!!!!! ALOT better than "Gladiator" for fuck sake.

I don't think Traffic was saying don't use drugs at all, it was trying to show that the war on drugs is a losing battle, and that the money the US has spent on this "war" would be far better spent by helping those who abuse drugs to overcome their addictions.

That's what I got out of the movie, anyhow... Maybe that's because those are my beliefs.

Drugs are bad..... Mmmmmmkay!

I say legalize it, with restrictions....

You can't have people driving under the influence of drugs, and I don't think that kids should be legitimatly able to by drugs, but if their parents are okay with rec. pot smoking at home, then what is..... is. All I know is that teenagers aren't behaved (I was one, I know... hey so were you.. you know what I mean) so they need to be kept away from the shit.

I would go so far as to say that the war on drugs needs to be stopped and that all drugs should be legal, if it wern't for the idea that when that was the case, Opium addiction was a severe problem, in the late 1800's, early 1900's, and people were dying all over the place, but then again, the level of understanding wasn't as high as it is today, and you could drink the shit.

Adults will ruin their lives in one way or another if they are hell bent in doing so. It is shameful that they have to lie, cheat, steal, and whatever to get away with thier addictions.... an that is what makes junkies so undesirable in the first place, is the lieing, stealing.... Not the using.

The educated consensus seems to be in favor of a wake up call, with solid, undeniable backing.

The uneducated consesus is that.... Drugs are bad.....Mmmmkay.

I think that the latter of the two is dopier than Heroin.

Oh and pot isn't a gateway drug.... people are gateways to thier own choices. Pot is a scapegoat.

Marijuana...Everclear...which one of these is harder on your system and which causes people to get more violently fucked up? Of course, everclear is.

The only thing I fear from legalization is that the government will mandate that the pot not be as strong as you can get it now.

If marijuana were legal, some of the poorest states in this country would be able to raise their economies tremendously.

don't forget about hemp paper products, also rope etc....
would save a hell of a lot of forests along the way.

also, with any substance, from coffee to herion, its the user that determines the effect. I'm not saying everyone should smoke dubage, but near-daily intact didn't/hasn't slowed my ivy-league educated management consultanting ass down one bit (no, i never went to school or go to work high), though it has made me considerably more smug about the whole affair:D

I did a thread on this last week, but...

I didn't get as many replies as I had hoped for. Perhaps folks here, now, are interested in sillier, less weighty topics.

I vote to treat "drugs" like alcohol and tobacco. Legalize it, control it and tax it and take the huge profits out of it. I feel the same about about prostitution.

you didnt get replies because most people agree here, at least about marijuana...no controversey, no urge to write stinging rebuttals....i'd say there are many here who like to debate weighty issues..that is if there is a debate...

It will never happen because of the anti-smoking zealots..those folks are nuts

hummm

It will never happen because of the anti-smoking zealots..those folks are nuts

Hey Rambling man - I am one of those anti-smoking people - and yes I do own a pair of nuts... But the reasons for not smoking are serious - have you seen your lungs lately - my biggest complaint against smoking is not the act or use of smokes - but that the tobacco companies put such filth in the cigs - I have seen a study that shows the use of regular tobacco to NOT cause such harmful effects - why can't they produce that kind of cig???
Seriously - who cares what another does to their own body - I am mean I am a nurse - I will see you soon if you abuse your body - and let's face it I need the work - LOL!!!
But they don't need to add the toxins to the cigs - and then I would have no prob with smoking!!!

WHEW - to much talking!!!

perhaps you are perhaps you are not...

I am a non-smoker, I smoke about three cigarrettes a year and have never had the habit. It is unhealthy and bad for the body, true...but

I am talking about people who campaign against smoking even outside. I am talking about lawmakers actually talking about making smoking illegal. Why did they get rid of smoking lounges in workplaces? Those areas did not hurt nonsmokers, it was just a way for non-smoking neo-Puritans to dictate to others what they can and cannot do. Some of them campaign against smoking sections in restaurants...why?

The reasoning behind the crusade is troubling, trying to make health decisions for people. What's next, the government ordering us to cut down on salt? Prohibiting consumption of fat-laden foods? All in the name of making people healthier, we allow these zealots to restrict and persecute a minority.

They will come after something you like, next...bet on it.

You may not be one of those people.

on the other hand, another Conservative Party politician has come out in favor of legalization

Also, it's the Republicans in the US who have the family values wing, but the same party has a strong libertarian wing that supports legalization

Stonedagger-

There are several brands of Tobacco-only cigarettes -- best known is American Spirit.

Smoke up Johnny!!!

Legalize mj, I have seen it use for medical purposes and it helps
if not pysically then mentally.

They say marijuana is a gateway drug, encouraging the user to try other drugs. The only reason it's a gateway drug is that we have 2 choices of obtaining it: Grow it ourself (damned risky) or buy it from some unsavory character who's trying to sell you coke, pills, and who knows what else. Legalize it, and those who want to use it don't have to worry about the Pusherman and all the other shit he's trying to sell you, we can grow it ourselves, or purchase it legally from a store.

M2c,
EOD~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~BTW, Here's a link to an article I found interesting. I'll try to send a link to thought-provoking articles about marijuana, legalization, and the war on drugs occasionally when I post. http://www.feedmag.com/templates/default.php3?a_id=375

The gateway drug argument is the only thing they can use against pot. It's not addictive and it's safer than alcohol or cigarrettes.

Colleges are so chock full of drugs that the federal rule against hiring people who have ever used them will not be feasible for much longer. Almost anyone baby-boomer or older is going to have used marijuana.

It is amazing how far some people will go to subvert the law to find a little pot....the infrared scanner that sees through your walls is such a clear violation of the Constitution...but every time I discuss that with anyone they always say "if yopu aren't doing anything you have nothing to worry about." The dumbest thing I think I've ever heard anyone say

There was a special on MSNBC a couple weeks ago, about BC Bud from Canada. When the Canadian police hear about grow houses, they have a special law enforcement unit that does nothing but go in and shut the grow houses down, and fines the growers (I can't remember the amount, but it was minimal). NO jail time, no trial - and it doesn't matter how big an operation you have. (If there are any Canadians reading this, perhaps you can comment.)

And if we tried to bring even an ounce of bud back into the States, the US border patrol would be waiting there with handcuffs.

Why do we (the US) gotta be such hard-noses about something so benign as marijuana?

211 people have viewed this thread, but only 43 have taken the poll. I don't care how you vote, but i would like it if everyone who views the thread at least takes the time to share your views on the subject. If the votes above are any indication, most of you feel that at least some form of legalization should be implemented. Maybe we can't make a difference, we're just a BB on a Website like millions of others, but it certainly can't hurt :)

Have a nice day!
