since the contest is already underway, if you haven't started writing, you might feel like this:
Protagonist (P) has been trying to get a gift idea from his/her spouse for weeks. finally on December 23rd, (s)he overhears one side of a telephone conversation in which the spouse explains (s)he secretly wants a very expensive and hard to find new model of tablet, but is afraid to ask for it because of the expense & inconvenience of trying to find.
P immediately goes to 4 stores. no tablet. arrives at store 5 right at closing. The clerk says there is one left... asks how badly P wants it & what P will do to be allowed to buy it...
(could have lots of fun with genders etc from there...)
