The darkness is so deep, night and day all seem the same. I sit inside my covered cage, never glimpsing the world beyond the dark velvet drape and golden bars. I am a prisoner. The only relief I can find is in my song, so i sing. My songs remind me of home, of the vast blue sky. There is barely enough room for me to stretch my wings now.

Xeres sighed tucking her legs under her body as she sat on the wide silver perch that hung from the top of her cage. She peered absently into the mirror attached to the bars of the cage. her eyes had long adjusted to the dim so she could make it her reflection. Her pale white hair reacted her waist now and was slightly dingy because if the built up dirt. Her skin was smooth and tan, her slender form and graceful curves covered by a plain black sleeveless dress. A sheer band covered her eyes.

Turning her back on the mirror she sighed. Ever so gently she rocked her legs back and forth causing the perch to swing. She leaned against the bar and closed her eyes. She stated humming and then burst into song. It was a bittersweet song, full of longing and passion, but still beautiful. She was still singing when the curtain was ripped from the cage. Her song fruit, replaced by a pained yelp, as the bright light invaded her eyes. Her wings shot open, the black feathers shimmering, as she tried to block out some of the light.

She blinked the years from her lashes and slowly lowered her wings. Cautiously she glanced up to survey her surroundings. She was in a large well lit circular room. Standing at the bars to her cage was a man she had never seen before.

”Who are you?” she asked softly.
