The "It's time to get my ass writing" thread

As the title implies, I have a few ideas that would make for some great stories. I have however been unforgivably lazy in writting. So, I would implore some of you fine friends and authors out there...

Get my ass moving!

Specfically, be creative in berating, movtivating me, shocking me, doing whatever it takes to get some motivation going. Right now I'm about to pop in some Marilyn Manson and just get to work.

When I need it though, I'm stopping back here for some words of encouragement. Knowing I'm not the only one who needs it at times, please feel free to post your own desire for some motivation and encouragement. I'm sure plenty of people here would love to crack the whip and get some of us lazy asses gonig. ;)

Will this help?

I wish I could offer real suggestions for you but I am in the same writing situation myself. I keep finding other things to do, like cooking supper, caring for my kids, doing the dishes, doing the laundry, etc.

And then there's chatting online, answering emails, shopping, etc.

*sigh*

(Although I do have one small suggestion - try it without Marilyn Manson.) :)

You animated suggestion would most inspire me, but I'm not sure if it would help to get me writing. ;)

Manson drives me. I'm writing a goth club scene right now and Manson puts the perfect mood into the story. My biggest distraction is chatting online. I must admit I'm guilty. Right now dishes are going and I'm about to work out a little bit. Then maybe I'll start filling the page with words...after dinner of course, oh, and the bed. ;)

:D

I shouldn't comment on anyone's choice of music.

It is whatever drives you, isn't it? Crank it up, then.

My ass is readty to write. Now, all I need is to either get a keyboard with mega sized keys or train myself to grab a pen with my buttocks...

You know, I think if you can pull off either, you're making some money somewhere.

Maybe try writing something each day, even if not from your story ... a writing ex, sumthin from your character's POV, a page a day - still means you are doing it and will get that ass of yours outta neutral and into first.

That's a great idea. For some reason I've been reluctant to start the daunting task of a story again. However, a small vingette or a simple first POV piece that's just fun and fluff should get my juices flowing again. And hopefully stir my writing muse. Thanks Kate.

I once saw a popular and prolific writer say his answer to the same problem was that he wrote <number> (i think it was 8 but not sure) hours a day.

He would sit and write whatever came into his head if he couldn't get a story to work.

No idea if this is any help, but it helped me.

I also have the habit of writing or recording any idea I have while doing other things. but it helps to have a phone that actually has a keyboard with that.

of course the tiny keyboard on my sidekick does leave me with some funny typos

I've been told the same thing. I really do want to sit down and write. Honestly, I don't have a problem writing. My problem lies in wanting to get my rough draft so perfect the first time that I'm afraid of putting words on the page for fear of making a mistake. I know that's all in my head. I spent 6 months on my one short story and it got better every time I re-wrote it. I know I could do the same with this story. I just have to do it.

Thanks again for the suggestion. If I can't get this story going, I'm definately writing something, anything.

maybe try not starting threads that you'll be tempted to come back and check on, thus distracting you from actual writing?

Hhmmmm...do you think that would really work? Nah...that can't be the reason I'm not writing. ;)

By the way...how is your novel coming along?

Nothing wrong with that. You've been plugging away at it for a while. Gotta pace yourself so you don't burn out.

I did get my opening going, which is what was holding me back for some reason. At least now I can come back to it and start to enjoy where it's going. :)

Thanks again for the suggestion. If I can't get this story going, I'm definately writing something, anything.

F. Scott Fitzgerald supposedly never stopped tinkering with his manuscripts. He was still revising Gatsby when he died.

There was an American artist name Ryder who never finished a painting. Even after it was sold he would show up at the owners house with his paints to touch it up a little. The paint on some of his pictures is so thick that today it's cracked like dried clay.

The point is, there's no end to revising and polishing. Every day you wake up a little different than you were the day before, so you can always go abck and change things in your story. You've got to realize when it's good enough though.

I used to have the same problem of not being able to put three words down on paper without agonizing over at least one of them, so I never got anything done. Since I couldn't do it perfectly, I wasn't interested in doing it at all.

Porn cured me. I might not be able to write brilliant prose straight from the bottle, but I can certainly write a fuck story. Then I can go back and revise what I've written to my heart's content, but only after it's all down.

That's the secret. Get the fucking story out first, then worry about polishing it. Until you've got the story you've really got nothing, so why even worry about it?

I agree. I do have the same problem, and always have really. I did manage to get a start that I can settle with for now and give the story direction to move. That's all I was really looking for. Now I just have to resist the urge to re-write the few paragraphs I already made and keep stumbling forward. Thanks Zoot. :)
