Conservators are bad ass people. It is amazing to see them work pulling dirt and grime from paintings.
I freak out when I am doing it with photos. I don't know how those working on paint, especially oil paintings do it!
It can be a bit pricey. It is also time intensive.
If you have any other paintings you don't care about you could buy the products yourself and do a test run. It basically comes down to finding the right cleaning solution for the painting then carefully apply the clenching solution then the neutralizing solution.
It is an inch by inch kind of thing. You can't pour, or swab, you have to dab and roll, and can't reuse the implements (usually cotton swabs/cloths)
I've watched it done. It is fascinating.
If you have the cash and the time (and can find a professional willing to do it) you will undoubtedly see a major difference.
Make sure you take some before and after pictures. Those are always fun.

Nah. It is nothing to be helped with.
Just the life of a single person. One could easily substitute many other subjects into that sentence and it would still be correct.
