I dunno why it hurts the knees more running outside than on the treadmill.
I'm the opposite. Treadmills kill my knees.
When outside are you running on pavement or grass? You put an incredible load on knees running, especially on pavement. Very load bearing. Cycling is not load bearing and just as good if not better cardio wise. Shoes are critical. I was in danger of not making out of basic training because the thin canvas issued runners they hand out gave me what felt like shin splints bad. Even combat boots were better to run in. Luckily they suddenly allowed civilian runners as long as they were not to brightly coloured. This was in early 80s. Neon runners were not in fashion at the time. Mine were black and brown.
I have fallen arches and any sort of running ends up making my feet hurt. Foot bone connected to the ankle bone, ankle bone connected to the shin bone... Running cross-country on dirt trails I can go three times a s far then pavement. I even try walk on grassy verges not sidewalk.
Exercise should not hurt beyond a bit of sore muscles. Knees do not have muscles. Be careful.
