The Isolated Blurt Thread XXIX: No Whining

I am not a motor builder but there are plenty of ways to make a V8 happy. The 72 Buick had a 4 barrel Quadrajet (sp?) that once tuned would run great. Had to be patient with it on cold mornings but it was rarely on the road when the weather was shitty.

For sure the 72 had stones. 74 was when they all had to have catalytic converters which not only did that of course effect airflow it caused all kinds of other tuning headaches.

Most of well tuned, for the most part clean burning, early v8 through most of the power band, tended to be not much different than a car with a catalytic converter. After all the object of the exercise is to burn the fuel inside the convention chamber not spill it out the tailpipe.

The problem was when you mash down on the throttle you activated the power valve which dumped fuel into the manifold to make up for the sudden gust of air that you just allowed into the manifold which screws up the manifold vacuum which makes the Venturas in the carburetor not properly meter the fuel for the sudden increase in air volume.

Squirting raw furl into the mix through a big aperture doesn't atomize it so a lot doesn't burn and ends up in the cat which then melts from the extra fuel. Bronzeage could better unsnarl my shade tree engineering understanding.

The upshot is they detuned the engines to save the cats. I think.

At the time they were hamstrung by creating a more eco friendly and fuel efficient vehicle. Also insurance companies started charging higher premiums for higher horsepower vehicles. Trust me, the cubic inches are there and that's what matters. There is no replacement for displacement.

I love the fat ride of a big block.

I could do without the fuel bill when gas is high.

Thanks Obama!

My old mid-life crisis begs to differ. I had better than 100 horsepower per liter of displacement all motor no forced induction. I've come to visualize motors as nothing but air pumps the faster you can pump the higher volume of air the more horsepower you have essentially.

You're absolutely right on the torque issue though it just seems like the really isn't any substitute to having eight cylinders although I remember people swearing that an inline 6 had better torque characteristics then a v8 I don't know how that can be true, though.

Although, I think you have to start before you can keep on.

Oh, I already started, before chance, we met. I'm big on unrequited love. Some call it stalking. People that call it that should be tracked to where they live and Pookie -ed.

When I worked for an NHRA Prostock Team we were building 500 cubic inch motors with 1300 horsepower normally aspirated of course. Now I hear they make 1600.

But yeah an engine is an air pump. Thats all it is and thats why superchargers are a beautiful thing.

I remember the first cassette tape I ever bought with my own money.

And waiting for certain songs to play on the radio all day so I could record them - the beginning of the song almost always cut out due to slow fingers.

I remember my first reel to reel... My first tape was Al Stewart's Orange that a NYC DJ made me for me.

I prefer requited, but I'll take unrequited in a pinch. As long as there's a sufficient amount of angst provided by either.

I'll give anyone here $10 to make me dinner.

I do know how to field dress out a human being and disatticulating a gimp would be easier, but I do not cook cannibal cuisine, you sicko.

I give them another $10 to make me ice cream ;)

See above, and the percentage of fat needed to turn a human into ice cream is off.

On the plus side, it would make a helluva Rob Zombie movie, "I Scream Into Ice Cream."

despite the fact i almost burnt the rice, it turned out perfectly. i think. there's always room for improvement. instead of jarred green sauce, i could have made the real thing, but that would have required travel, and i did not want to travel today.
