don't know what it means but the animals know when shit's not right. if they are 'leaving in droves', i'd be right there with them if at all possible. there might be noxious gasses being released gradually, or they can feel the disturbances, their food/water supplies might e tainted and taste wrong, all manner of things our senses aren't developed enough to notice.
