Due to circumstances I had little control over, I haven't been on a vacation (visiting my family in New England for a week annually does NOT count) in nearly nine years. That hopefully will end this winter or next summer at the latest, and I'm looking for places to go to enjoy my newfound life.
Tell me about your best vacations, where you went, and what made them memorable ... aside from your partner, because I won't be there with your partner. What was there to do (again, not your partner)? What new experiences were there? Why would you recommend this place to your friends?
And more explicitly, if you've ever done any of the following, tell me all about it:
On safari in eastern Africa
River cruising on the Yangtze, visiting the Chinese interior, followed by a brief trip to Beijing
Overnight rafting down the Colorado River, or in the Urals
Dog sledding in Alaska or the Yukon (or Scandinavia, for that matter)
Zip-lining in the Costa Rican jungle
Dolphin experiences, shark experiences in the Caribbean
Sailing on one of the windjammers off New England (or possibly in the Caribbean)
Any particularly outstanding hot air balloon rides
I'm also thinking about a 2010 visit to Vancouver for the Olympics or South Africa for the World Cup ... provided I could get tickets. Has anyone ever been to either event? How hard were tickets to come by?
