This is a busy time of year, what with March Madness, Hockey, Baseball and NASCAR all on at the same time. I barely have time for a nap.

But I got to thinking about who would be considered the greatest for each sport.

Basketball - Michael Jordan. No question.
Football - Joe Montana?
Baseball - No idea
Hockey - Gretsky
NASCAR - Richard Petty
Golf - Arnold Palmer
Soccer - who cares, it's a child's sport.

Figures that, in a thread where you belittle soccer but list NASCAR as a sport (LOL), you don't include boxing and the man whose nickname actually is "The Greatest"...

Basketball - Michael Jordan.
Football - Jim Brown
Baseball - Willie Mays
Hockey - No idea
NASCAR - No idea
Golf - Tiger Woods
Soccer - Pele

Football is a hard one to pick because each position has greats, and the game has changed a lot.

NASCAR- rednecks will argue and fight to the death over that one. You could be right with Petty, some will say David Pearson, and the unholy horde will scream Earnhart.

I'm Petty fan, but put all in the same era with the same equipment, and sadly I think Earnhart would probably take him. Now I will go kill myself for saying that outloud.

I personally thank Gretzky is better than Gretsky.

Baseball would be between Ruth/ Mays/ Aaron.

Boxing: Ali

Fencing: Some goof

Literotica: Squibbs

I vote Jack Nicklaus for golf.

Team sports are difficult. A legitimate answer featuring any "great" can be accepted.

Bonds
Ali
Brown
Squibs

Seriously, it's a tough call for any sport since sports evolve. So I think you have to look at players in their time who appeared to be men playing with boys.

Basketball - Jordan
Football - Tough call, for reasons you say, but I might go with Rice
Baseball - Ruth is the obvious call, but in the end I'd also have to go with Barry Bonds. All-time HR leader, single-season HR record, 7 MVPs (including 4 in a row), 8 Golden Gloves; hard to think of a single player who comes close, on steroids or off.
Hockey - Who cares, it's soccer on ice for concussed white people
NASCAR - Who cares, it's wrestling with dumber fans
Golf - Nicklaus, until Woods gets there.
Soccer - that hot woman from the US Olympic team, selected for spurious reasons.

what about Squibs?

Jessica Ennis and whatever the hell sport she does.

Basketball - Michael Jordan. No question.Agreed
Football - Joe Montana? LAwrence Taylor
Baseball - No idea Barry Bonds even with the roids
Hockey - Gretsky Lemieux
NASCAR - Richard Petty who cares
Golf - Arnold Palmer Jack Nicklaus
Soccer - who cares, it's a child's sport. No idea

I woulda said Tiger for golf, but since his wife clipped him with a 4-iron he seems to have lost his mojo.

Lawrence Taylor was a good call for football. Brett Favrebean is another good argument.

I overlooked boxing. Mostly because I can't name a single current boxer... wait... that packy-ow guy? But I'd say Ali for boxing.

Soccer... that dumbass with all the tats that the women swoon for? I forget his name, but he came to the US and sucked. I guess our MLS is just more competitive than Europe's league(s)

Baseball - no love for Cal Ripken?

Muhammad Ali is the greatest athlete of all time. He literally drew fans to boxing who had never watched the sport. Part of his charm and talent was having the audacity to predict which round he would win or knock out his opponent. Well known politicians and celebrities were at his famous fights. Many considered him the "Fighter for the People", especially blacks. Ali is a cultural icon. He always held strong to his convictions and beliefs and is true to love of self and black culture. Long after leaving the sport, and now fighting his battle against Parkinson's disease, Ali continues to be an inspiration to his fans and other athletes. A true champion who never gives up - in mind, body, and spirit.

He was very unfair to Joe Frazier. Joe didn't deserve to be labeled a Tom.

You should be around men whenever the "debate" about who's the best sports athlete of all time. Let an old Ali fan start yapping. Jesus Christ man, the testosterone level goes off the richter scale!
