For almost twenty years we've had over here a thing called SERPS.

I don't know what the first S means but the rest of it stands for 'Extended Retirement Scheme'...

The idea was that when a man dies his widow would get 100% of his pension.

All paid in and done in advance.

Guess what? Our cunting government have suddenly decided that widows will only get 50% of the pension, tapering down to 25% by the year 2010...

It's a typical fucking case of "we've got your money now fuck off"...

God I hate governments...

That is so wrong........

the money is earned and should be given to the retiree or his spouse....

I suppose a person should just take a lump sum payment upon retirement from now on.

Get it all up front and screw the Brit Wanker Govt Arseholes.

Siren I couldn't agree with you more but this was a Government scheme...

promises...promises...promises...

I admire some of your thoughts ...but please get your facts straight

At some point the politicians do have to own up to that fact that they can't pay for all the promises. This is their way of doing it. You should have called them on it long before p_p_...

and with no real opposition to speak of, who can fix these broken things? Who can turn it around? The LibDems? Now that the Cons and the LibDems are equal in the polls, it seems they may have a chance, pp. What do you think?

I think the Germans will do a much better job once they get their hands firmly on the reigns. LONG LIVE THE NHRE! GAWD SAVE THE KAISER!

Sounds like another government run Ponzi scheme to me, Peeps.

Give it a few years and you'll hear the same plans advanced for our Social Security program, only it won't be widows, it will be anyone who planned for their retirement. Anyone who receives a small pension or has a retirement saving plan will be deemed too "lucky" to deserve their benefits!

Rhumb:rolleyes:

I always thought it was the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme.

Other than that,Right on.

Tories,Libdems,Labour.What's the difference?.

yes I thought that SERPS was state earning related pension scheme as well

ANYWAY

whatever it is called it is fucked - the whole of Europe is a pension time bomb waiting to go off. No one can save enough now to have a decent pension - the whole market is going down the tubes - All final salary schemes are getting done away with and most Pension funds are in trouble

My Fathers generation were ok - he has got a reasnable pension , but anyone under 40 nowadays is in for a rude shock

There are now more people over 60 in the Uk than under 20 - it is going to get worse to - remember in the UK it this years national insurance that is supposed to be the same years pension - it wont work . Anyone who has gone private will be in for a shock too when they find out that a decent annuitie cost a lot more than they thought.

Shit I sound like Redwave

but it is depressing - we will all end up wotking till we are 70 now

SERPs - an old, scandalous problem

The Government aren't suddenly implementing this ruling.

The current problem with SERPs dates back to 1986 when the Tory Government decided to make changes to SERPs policies. The changes meant that widows would receive only half of their partner's pension. In order to give people enough time to adjust to the changes in the ruling, they put in place a 14 year buffer period. That is, although the decision to change SERPs policy took place in 1986, it's implementation was to happen in 2000.

However, it was in 1986 when an inexcusable 'error' took place. The Tory Government of the time failed to notify the public of the changes. It's unbelievable but true.

We could look upon this with a cynical eye and wonder whether their failure to inform the public had something to do with the year after, 1987, being a general election year, who knows. At any rate, not only did they fail to inform the public at the time but for a full ten years thereafter.

When the 'error' came to light, it was felt by the currrent Government that it would be unfair to implement the changes in 2000 as it was timetabled. They gave a further two years buffer period. It is estimated that this 'error' will cost an extra 8 billion pounds to cover the short fall.

Remember these facts when the Tories start putting out their skanky spin about being the pensioner's champion. Also never forget that the Tories opposed the setting up of state pension in the first place.
