Most of our local prostitutes are from Eastern Europe. (The current estimate is that 80% of prostitutes working in London are not UK residents. The local percentage is thought to be nearer 55%. But both are official guesstimates!) A few are working as sex workers from choice as the fastest way to make money to establish themselves or their family back in their home country.
Too many are working to pay off gangmasters, pimps or people smugglers and are effectively in economic slavery. The police try to break that pattern, and the new legislation in the UK makes a small difference in that the clients might be more willing to give evidence to avoid being prosecuted themselves.
A few, such as my former neighbour, were/are providing specialist services for older men. They are more likely to be UK citizens working within the law and are older women apparently in their 40s.
All the above tend to work indoors in legal or illegal brothels with some safeguards against violent and abusive clients.
But the women with the greatest risk of injury or health problems are those selling themselves on the street for drugs.
Locally the agencies try to get the drug-addicts off the streets and into some sort of programme but there aren't enough available places. The brothels are raided from time to time to check for illegal immigrants and for sex slavery. All the raids tend to do is close the operation in one premises that then moves to another. Getting the women to give evidence against their exploiters is almost impossible.
How do I know? I work with the Police and other agencies locally on crime and anti-social behaviour. The community reports new brothels as they become known.
