is they are really intolerant of opposing viewpoints.
seems to be in direct opposition to what it is they spout to believe in.

Where are these liberals of which you speak. All the ones I know preach love and tolerance.

is they are really intolerant of opposing viewpoints.

I made a whole thread re: tolerance of opposing viewpoints, and expressed the specific ones I was tolerant of. And other liberals chimed in with theirs.

Your side didn't come up with jack shit. Your side fucking lost that one.

Play again?

You miss the point. "Liberal" is just the facade ideology of the world conspiracy. Every power structure needs an ideology to hide behind. That's just human nature. I used to think nobody was really liberal in real life until I started coming to internet forums. Sadly, these "liberals" are just duped useful idiots for the power structure and don't even realize it.

This is a false argument....tolerance of ideas is a great thing as long as both sides are playing by the same rules. I can equally disagree with someone on a religious stance as long as both of us are protected by the law to our own opinions. However, when one side wants to change the laws that protect us both so they can push a one sided ideology on to people who don't want it, tolerance is no longer an issue and intolerance of something that will destroy those freedoms is justified. Those seeking to destroy FREEDOM and replace it with HATRED, PREJUDICE, and IGNORANCE should not be given any quarter. So go ahead and say that liberals are intolerant, because while accepting of many creeds, ideas, beliefs, and backgrounds that liberals are...many of us will NOT stand idlly by as hard line ignorant republicans want to trash the same freedoms that they keep trying to claim that they are protecting.

It takes a lot of brass to accuse someone of what you're doing yourself...

i'll listen to to your stupid argument before dismissing it off hand. i think that is more than fair.

Ah yes, that liberal screed; "Communist, freedom hating, over entitled, babykilling terrorist."

I have no idea what people mean when they exhort tolerance. It usta mean suffering what cant be changed, the foundation of stoicism. But our liberals define tolerance as taking it up the ass with a smile and a song in your heart, and it doesnt apply to them.

We're intolerant of intolerance. I love it when conservatives say that means we're intolerant

Because they know they are always right on every topic, in every discussion and if you cannot see that then you are not smart enough to deserve any respect; the vehicle that lends itself best to this subtle form of intolerance is that their motives are, in all honesty, as pure as the wind-driven snow, as one of my really good liberal friends puts it, I just want to do good and leave the world in a better place, which implies that you disagree with them then your motives boil down to selfishness and greed and it then becomes a passion play, good versus evil and who in their right mind tolerates evil? Evil must be fought to leave the world a better place.

I leave you with a medley of shortcuts that I, and others have developed over the years:

A_J's corollary #6, “The New Age Liberal thinks, ‘When I do/say it, it is right because of my open-minded education and intelligence. When you do/say it, it serves to demonstrate how narrow-minded, poorly educated and stupid you are.’”

A_J's corollary #13, “The New Age Liberal believes in his good intentions, his big heart and his ability to find transgression and to discern solution by the application of benevolent government.”

A_J's corollary #15, “The New Age Liberal truly believes he is a nuanced thinker who can discern every nuance of grey in his argument. Everyone else is a Republican black and white thinker.”

I bitched about Bush for six years, and through all that time the Republicans on this board never trashed me the way the Democrats do now that "their guy" is "in charge."

They were angry when Bush was President, but they seem even more angry now that Obama is President.

Maybe it's just disappointment.

Contemporary leftists, on the other hand, view their opponents as people you send off to the Gulag, unworthy of any respect, deserving of any kind of low blow, no matter how foul. So you accuse Goldwater of insanity, slander Justice Thomas as a sexual monster, casually publish plays, books, and films calling for the assassination of President Bush, and assault the first serious Republican female candidate at her weakest point -- her family. And of course, you scream to high heaven if any form of turnabout occurs in your direction, as in the case of the Obama family, which was declared "off limits" early in the presidential campaign, at the same time that Palin's family was being stretched on the media rack.

This style of political loathing has become effectively innate. It has been systemized to such a degree as to become integral. Modern liberalism cannot do without it. An entire structure has been erected on the basis of political hatred, and from that structure a whole new strategy has arisen.

J.R. Dunn

The Obama campaign is veering toward antinomianism. Since it regards its own motives as pure, it feels it can dispense with the normal rules of accuracy, civility and decency. So we get the political methods of Spiro Agnew combined with the moral self-regard of Woodrow Wilson. It is not an attractive mixture.
Michael Gerson

I regard "tolerance" as teh recognition of and respect for belief systems that differ from my own beliefs. Having said that, not all belief systems merit equal respect. Also no belief system should be given more respect than it is due.

It is possible to recognize and respect a belief system while criticizing it at teh same time.

Possible...but not required.

People can, and will, choose not to respect belief systems (genital mutilation, Nazism, Ayn Rand, etc) that run counter to generally accepted cultural norms, and those who believe in those fringe belief systems have a tendency to trot out teh "intolerance of MY intolerance" defense.

You're just starting to notice this?

Anyone who studies the history of ideas should notice how much more often people on the political left, more so than others, denigrate and demonize those who disagree with them -- instead of answering their arguments.
Thomas Sowell
