The funniest AH dweller

I didn't come around until late 2016 but my understanding is that for a few years prior to that things were much more poisonous than they are now. I think by the standards of social media in general--especially forums that invite discussion and disagreement--this place is fairly tame.
Tbf this is one of the best social media threads to hang out. People are generally supportive and interested in what each other has to say and what they are doing? It’s hard to see this as a toxic environment or why it would be?

Hmmm.

Because we all have views that aren't compatible with others on the site, and at times we get snarky with one another.

But one of the reasons I think it’s rarer here (from my experiences so far) is that we all know we’ll bump into each other again.

You might comment on something I say, I might offer a view in something you’ve put (like now) and so there’s no point really being an asshole about things.

Whereas with people we don’t regularly encounter it’s easier to be ruder I think, at least that’s my big takeaway but I could be wrong (God, I could murder a big takeaway now. Why did I have to put it like that?)

Yeah, this ain't Facebook, and that's great 👍

Well, other than he whom I shall not name, you might be right. (his initials are

Tilan)

Yeah, but that by itself isn't toxic. Disagreement, even spirited disagreement, isn't a bad thing. When it gets to name-calling and accusations of ignorance and bad faith, then it's a bad thing. But that's more the exception than the norm here.

Copy this. Simon and I regularly engage in popcorn threads with banter about penguins and ships passing, and me not giving a toss about his blessed constitution, but that's because we're both opinionated bastards with nothing better to do than entertain the masses. It's what we do. But we only do it for the joust, and the next queen's handkerchief, and there's always the secret handshake.

Carry on ;).

Quite right. I feel just the same way. And I feel that way with 90+% of the people I disagree with here. It's not personal.

Take it with a grain of salt. I've long come to terms that in most manners of disagreements, most people can only comprehend within' the realms of their willingness to understand. It's rarely about understanding at all, but instead entirely about being heard, which is why I prefer to avoid debates and disagreements all together.

And the sub ten-percent, in my case, are on Ignore, so I never have to know what they're saying (which is usually the same old same old - I can tell that from the surrounding posts, where new forum players arrive at the same conclusion).

Not too sure about that being more of an exception. Not in my experience here, at least. ;)

Oh, yes, death and destruction, how very romantic and sexy is that?
Never meant to imply that it was. I think I was trying to say that, if I remember the topics that have been mulled over on these threads. here are worse things than tasteless stories and even school shooters. Not that those aren't bad too; just trying to give some perspective. Nikolas Cruz killed seventeen people in Florida in about twenty minutes; probably more than seventeen people died every second on The Somme or at Antietam.

I'm giving a hint of what will be in my Geek Pride story. There are no actually deaths during the course of the plot.

Emily, at some people have chosen to discuss their Geek Pride plots in some detail. Fine, whatever they wish. I prefer to keep it under wraps because it's a known event with a "go live" date. Everybody knows that it's going to happen and when.

Some people have even chosen to discuss their upcoming stories in general. It seems better to just publish it and then talk about it (the entire Story Feedback section) later if there is any interest it.

Joking, gun, just joking.

I've already nominated six people by my count, including one in an entirely new category I made up. Now we have to figure out to arrange the voting. I suspect that is going to be difficult considering the ad hoc and transitory nature of Internet forums. Threads are like stars: they burn white hot, expand to aging red giants, and then fizzle out to dead rocky asteroids.
If there is ever a contest for most poetic one-sentence description, you've got my vote.

Which Emily, hun? Me or my other persona, EMcP?

Bit of rather dodgy astrophysics there, hun.

Em

Except for those threads that have sufficient mass to go supernova. Between us all, there is plenty of ego to supply the needed mass easily ;)

The pull of my magnetic personality could create a black hole. If I was the egotistical type, that might be dangerous.
Black holes aren’t magnetic - oh, sorry it was next door that ordered the science lesson - my bad!

[actually they kinda can be, but not like that]

Em - I’ll get my coat on [phrase learnt in London]

It's not a magnet but rather honey that attracts flies. A mouth that produces honey always draws them in. Flies like honey... and shit.

Way too many flies...
A mouth that produces honey would be awesome
