Rick Stevens sat at his desk taking one last opportunity to review the file of this years candidate. As the managing partner and founder of Stevens, Wilford and Burns the final decision fell to him and him alone. Of the hundreds of law school graduates his firm hired every summer only one would be selected to work at their comparably small headquarters. There the candidate would be groomed in the practices, culture and tradition of Stevens, Wilford then be granted the opportunity to manage his own office to grow in the tradition of the firm.
Being a well regarded firm, Stevens, Wilford only hired the best of the best. On paper, each candidate was virtually indistinguishable from the other. Each of them graduated at the top of their class with the accolades one would expect to accompany their achievements. To stand out though, it took far more than academic achievement. Looks, charisma, charm. Those were the attributes that separated the field and at the end, only one rose to the top.
Rick sat gazing into his display at the recent wedding photo that accompanied the file. Had it been only him, he'd have likely fallen to the wayside like so many of the others but his new wife easily elevated him to the front of the pack. Rick's finger pressed against the glass tracing the contours of her body as memories of the dinner they shared passed through his mind. Even in that brief encounter he could tell that the couple would fit in. His drive for success knew no bounds and whether he knew it or not, Rick could tell that he'd be willing to sacrifice just about anything to achieve that success. "I guess we'll soon see." Rick said in the quiet of his office as his fingers closed around the handset of his phone.
***********
"Oh my god! That's amazing! You won't regret it!" Mitch exclaimed before tapping the screen of the phone and disconnecting the call.
Law school had been a grind and at times he regretted the decision to pursue it after receiving his graduate degree in accounting. At 23 he had it all: youth, looks and a girlfriend most would do anything for. Law school was always a gamble but one that he'd hoped would pay off. There were times during the long nights of study that he wondered whether she'd stick with him through it. Now 26, none of it came without sacrifice from her but she stood by his side and they eventually married during the Christmas break before graduation.
"You're not going to believe it! Stevens, Wilford." He called out through the small apartment. "Company car, house, expanse account, the works!" In that one moment, all of their sacrifices seemed to pay off as he searched the apartment for his wife.
