Were the Columbia crew listening to Space Truckin' as they blew up?

Possibly, as the Deep Purple classic heavy rock hit was on their playlist.

Kalpana listened to rock and raga on Columbia

WASHINGTON:

In a pre-mishap write-up on the Deep Purple website, Kalpana's husband Harrison, who is evidently a DP fan and later friend and who introduced her to the rock group, says Kalpana selected Purple's Machine Head and Purpendicular albums because they had aviation/space-related songs (Space Truckin and The Aviator, respectively).

"As my wife, STS-107 crewmember Kalpana Chawla, has commented, 'Deep Purple has something so superior.' She and I attended the DP concert in Bossier City, Louisiana, during the 2001 US tour, her first-ever rock concert and my first-ever DP concert.

Accompanying them to the concert was Rona Ramon, wife of the Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon who also died in the Shuttle disaster.

Apparently Gillan and the Band cracked up when they saw the list because their selection was Space Truckin, a piece Harrison elegantly describes as a "little more insistent than the others."

Space Truckin’ lyrics

We had a lot of luck on Venus

We always had a ball on Mars

Meeting all the groovey people

We've rocked the Milky Way so far

We danced around with Borealice

We're space truckin' round the the stars

Come on let's go Space Truckin'

Remember when we did the moonshot

And Pony Trekker led the way

We'd move to the Canaveral moonstop

And everynaut would dance and sway

We got music in our solar system

We're space truckin' round the stars

Come on let's go Space Truckin'

The fireball that we rode was moving

But now we've got a new machine

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah the freaks said

Man those cats can really swing

They got music in their solar system

They've rocked around the Milky Way

They dance around the Borealice

They're Space Truckin' everyday

You're welcome; it's that little extra bit of humanity in each of those brave explores we should celebrate.

Hard to go wrong with ZZ....I always found it funny that the only member of the band without a beard was named...Frank Beard.

How about a Major Tom moment? Chances are they didn't have that on their lists.
