Today, I find out for a fact that my son is autistic. Not severely, but it is still there.
He will be going in for blood and urine tests to help pinpoint exactly what he has. From what I was told, the X chromosome from me could have contributed, but I was aware of that already.
So, for the next few weeks I am going to wonder exactly what I am dealing with. Though highly functional, he will always have problems and I think that is what I find the most difficult.
All I can give him is my understanding and love.
What more can a little boy ask for?
I also found out that he may be havin seizures, so he will have to undergo an EEG. The hope for me is that he isn't having seizures that it is the normal part of being autistic.
Some of his behaviour has worsened and some has improved. I would have to guess that this, too, is normal.
If I get anything new, I will be sure to share. Thanks for listening.

I do volunteer work with Autistic Kids.

I'm escorting 2 tonight for Halloween, when I get back I'll post some links. Post a general area where you live, there are tons of support groups.

BTW, Autism is a disability covered by Social Security. Be strong.

I live in Charleston, Il. The neurologist was kind enough to give me aa number for a support group, but I am not driving to Urbana every week for that!

thats tough momma...my youngest neice is autistic and the only thing i can say is over the past few years shes made amazing progress.

shes pretty much the only member of my family i like.

hope it goes easy on you...don't stress.

Thank you, honey. I appreicate your kind words:)

It's going to be tough, yes, but it isn't anything I haven't been prepared for when I became a mother.

Thank you, again.!

What exactly is autism?

I always associated it with diffuculty in learning.

Autism has no true diagnosis, there are indicators. Depending on how many indicators depends on the severity. The learning process is hindered of course.

They're socially retarded

he'll probably not get a decent job

more than likely if its a slight case momma will work extra hard to get him to try harder, and he'll more than likely end up doing damn well for himself.

BigMama, I am a Special Education teacher and I work with children who have various disabilities. I have taught children that would be considered in the autistic spectrum, but I have not heard of any type of xhromosome contributing to this disability.

If you ever want to talk, feel free to PM me about it. I'm curious to know what characteristics she displays and to what extent, that she was diagnosed as having autism. i might be able to give you a few pointers, but the children I have worked with who had autism were considered high functioning.

Sometimes I feel like a strategic slapm in the face would help

enough about what worked for you, we are here for BgMa99

Not necessarily. I've had children with Asberger's Syndrome (it's on the spectrum of autism), and they are acaademically high functioning. That's the thing with autism- there are so many different forms and degrees of it- it can make you mind whirl just trying to figure it out...

The closest I can get in describing autisim for Aquila, is that they live in our world, but just in their own way.
For the severely autistic, they live in their own world and cannot acknowledge ours. At least that is what is thought. No one is really certain about that part.

marksgirl offered to send me a book that she feels would be helpful. I think it's a good move, and I am willing to reimburse her for the shipping, if she is listening!

I live in a dinky town and no one near me has any books that would be useful. Sheesh

I remember reading something about 10 years ago, where they found out that a portion of kids with autism were actually kids with a type of hearing disorder. Basically, there was a permanent ringing in their ears, and because they had to live like that, they were slow learners and/or wouldn't/couldn't learn.

Anyone else hear about this or know more about it?

true and false... depends on the indicators and diagnosis, and continued occupational therapy. So many factors to consider.

My post was a little strong, but it was not off base.

Just a reminder that I'm here for you if you need anything. I was thinking about you and your son earlier today and wondered how it was going for you.

Big hugs for both of you!!

Please re-read what I wrote. I said that the children I have had with Asberger's are academically high functioning. It really depends on the child. You made a sweeping generalization that isn't necessarily true. Many children with autism have difficulty only with social skills; some have difficulty with academic skills, and a lot of them have difficulty with both.

This must be the toughest thing to go throught for a mother. All you want is what is best for your children...that they are happy. He is fortunate to have a caring mother.

Without love...you have a Hanns_Schmidt
which I would love to meet and break in half for being a fucking insensitive thing.

Darlin' what more could anyone ask for?

Dude, your post is more insensitive than mine was.

"All you want is what is best for your children...that they are happy" autistic kids are happy.

Don't threaten me again..Laurel is watching

I'm willing to bet that most people would look the other way.

and I wasn't saying that an autistic child isn't happy, it was a general statement. Now you can deduct points because I'm an idiot, but I think teresa knew what I meant.
