Our characters share a similar story -- in the months before and after New Year 2000, our mothers shacked up with a mysterious man described as the cliche "tall, dark, and handsome stranger." Unbeknownst to them at the time, this man spent several months traveling the world, having sex with as many young women as possible, in the hopes of leaving behind several bastard children.
That man was no man at all, however -- he was a dragon. The last surviving of his kind. Morgaust the Wise, they used to call him, before the Templars had killed off his brethren centuries prior and erased all Magi from the historical records. To escape the destruction of his people, Morgaust called upon his vast skill in Alchemy to transmute himself into a golden eagle, leaving behind his excess mass as a giant pile of gold nuggets. As the Templars raided his lair in the Scottish Highlands, the dragon took flight. They came upon the gold nuggets, and carted them out to a metalsmith to be forged into coins, rings, amulets, goblets, platters, cutlery, and various other works.
The gold creations were sold at a variety of markets throughout Catholic lands, and the eagle swore to one day retrieve his scattered essence to recreate his original body. However, as he was flying away thinking over his plans, he found it harder and harder to maintain his dragon's mind, and then suddenly turned to solid gold, just as his remnants. His metal body fell out of the sky and sunk to the bottom of the ocean, where it remained for many centuries as the Templars eradicated all magic from the world, which they had deemed Satanic.
Fast forward to 1993, and the golden eagle statue had been retrieved by deep sea divers and sat in the Amsterdam mansion owned by Dutch treasure hunter Johan Wijsven. After a recent expedition to a Polynesian island chain in the South Pacific, the hunter had discovered a large golden chalice buried under the ruins of an old French port town. When he brought this piece back to his home, it revived the slumbering eagle statue, Morgaust sensing part of his essence in close proximity -- the chalice was made from the gold that once comprised the dragon's body.
After absorbing the gold into his body, Morgaust had enough mass to transmute into a small child. He used what magical energy he had regenerated to enthrall Wijsven, who portrayed the dragon as his adopted son. Through his new father's network of contacts and associates, Morgaust began recollecting parts of his golden body, until he was able to assume the form of an adult human.
By the end of 1999, the dragon had gathered enough magical energy to alert the present-day Templars, so he set out on a months-long mission to impregnate as many women as possible. He then took the form of an elderly homeless man in Portland, Oregon and temporarily sealed away his memories and powers, awaiting all of his offspring to reach maturity.
Our characters have turned eighteen within the last few months, and once the last of the dragon's bastards reaches adulthood, we all begin having strange dreams about magical creatures. We are drawn to Portland and all seem obsessed with this strange, mentally-ill homeless man. Eventually we trigger the return of his memories, and he begins instructing us how to use our dormant dragon powers so that we can one day take out the Templars, collect all the gold pieces, and rebuild our species.
To help us channel our abilities, he cuts open his hand and drips a small puddle of blood into a plastic cup, transmuting it into a small amulet for each of us. Wearing the said amulet around our necks gives us greater magical focus, while also shielding us from the Templars' scanners.
