Defender's Lunar Base, Training Room
Makoto's eyes went wide and her face paled at Lynx's smile, directly at her, before the Ferasi woman departed with one of the other new team members. Was that...could she? The Japanese woman felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her. She knew. How could she know? There was no way! But maybe there was. Deduction? Some of her marvelous little toys?
She jumped to her feet and strode across the space of the training room, making a bee line for the door. She had to leave. Had to leave now. She knew, and if she knew, she might tell, and if she told, they'd react badly. They'd hate her. Call her a freak. They might hurt her. Like Hiro did.
Makoto was almost to the door when John made the announcement. She stopped in front of it and looked back over her shoulder. The brawny bulk of the commander and the slender grace of Avery were side by side, ready for their demonstration.
John hadn't hated her. Neither had Avery. Her panic and fear...they hadn't been justified with those two. Was it fair of her to feel that way about the others learning the truth?
Statistics certainly were on her side. Trans people, transitioned or not, faced condemnation or violence from their loved ones when they came out an overwhelming majority of the time. But these also weren't just any people.
Her hand wavered over the console that would open the door. Her instincts screamed at her to open it and walk out, head to the teleporters and go back to Tokyo. Do that was safest, what gave the best chance for survival. Don't let yourself be hurt again.
Makoto took a deep breath and stepped back away from the door. She'd trust them. Oh, oh, this was probably such a mistake! But she had to give them the chance. They deserved it. She turned and walked stiffly to one of the crates and sat down, apart from the others already present. The curvy Japanese beauty continued to take deep breaths, trying to steady herself and be attentive to what was about to take place.
