The Day She Returned

Alana answered the cell phone and listened to Haydens excuse of why he couldn't meet her at the house, " Right Hayden. Just a late appointment. You're such a liar. I'll be here all night, so just stop by whenever ok? I talked to Joe by the way. Didn't go well." She kept the conversation short and simple then she sat down on the couch to watch some TV. Alana ordered some pizza since she hadn't finished her dinner at Betty's.

After about an hour the pizza delivery guy showed up and gave her the pizza. She still had not heard anything from Hayden or Joe as she set the pizza down on the coffee table. Alana jogged upstairs and changed into a pair of silk blue pajama pants that had clouds on them as well as a white tank top. Then she went back to watching TV and eating her pizza.

Joe finally pulled himself off the grass an hour later, feeling melancholy. He had had a lot to think of, but he had finally made an important decision. He was going to get drunk. He headed over to his truck, getting in and heading for the closest bar. He parked outside and headed inside, nodding his head to the bartender. "Hey Travis, brew and a shot, and keep 'em coming." He held his head in his arms as he waited for his drinks. "So I take it you ran into Alana then?" Joe turned his head and saw Barney sitting there. "Put those drinks on my tab eh Travis?" He said. "Christ that's gotta be a hard blow to take eh?" "Yeah it really is, thanks for the drinks." Joe said as he tilted the shot straight back, chasing it with his beer. "I wanted to be upset at her... but fuck.. she just..." Joe sighed. "Bring me another will ya Travis?" He asked, as he chugged down the beer.

Alana looked around the large house and sighed slightly, it was just like being in her apartment in the city. Empty and lonely. She wished Joe would call her but she knew that wasn't going to happen. She just wanted to hold him as she fell asleep just like old times but that wasn't going to happen either. Alana had half a mind to call his cell phone but she decided against that. She sighed softly and laid down on the couch then wrapped herself in a blanket. "Joe, I miss you." She was speaking to herself of course but saying it out loud made her feel better about the situation.

Five rounds later Joe was feeling pretty good. No he felt damn good. He was drunk as a skunk and all his troubles were gone. "I should call Alana!" He said, louder than he meant to since Barney was right next to him. "I'll call her and I'll tell her exactly how I feel! That'll be the ticket!" He roared with laughter, nearing falling out of his seat. "You go get her boy. Hit that shit." Barney responded. Joe turned to him, giving him a fake look of confusion before cracking up again and grabbing his phone and getting up.

He looked in his phone and saw the number that had called him when he was driving. It was a good bet this was Alana's new number. He hit the send button and held the phone up to his ear... not hearing any ringing.. then realized he had the phone upside down and put it against his ear again.

RING RING..

Alana blinked slightly as she heard her phone ringing, " What the fuck.....It's 2 in the morning." She grumbled slightly then picked up her without even looking at the caller ID on the phone, " Hello?" She spoke into the phone tired then blinked slightly as she realized it was Joe and he was drunk. Very drunk. " Joe......What are you doing? You do realize its 2 in the morning right?"

"2 in the...... what?! It's like 11! Thasss not eh poin anyway!" He slurred. "I've ben doin a lot of thinkin and drink." He almost bust out laughing when he realized his words rythmed. Shit he was drunker than he thought. "I just wanted to say... that oyu hurt me. But I still care about you, and you've always ben the only one for meee." Joe's grip on the phone slipped as he stumbled, standing becoming an issue for him.

Alana sighed softly then stood up from the couch and grabbed her car keys as she headed out the door. She climbed in her car then started the car and started to drive to the bar. It was the only in town that Joe would actually go to. "I'm coming to pick you up. You can't drive."

After about 10 minutes she pulled into the parking lot then walked into the bar and started to look for Joe. " Where are you at?" She asked as she talked to him over the phone and sighed when she saw him stumbling around the bar area like a drunken idiot.

Joe tried to insist that he was fine to drive, but was once again holding the phone the wrong way so she heard none of his protests. He stumbled back into the bar, trying to plop himself down next to Barney but failing miserably, having to shoot out his arms to grab the bar. "Didja tell her how you felt Joe?" Travis asked as Joe got settled again. "Tell who how I what now?" Joe asked staring at the man confused. "Nevermind." He said, walking off chuckling. "ANOTHER BEER PLEASE!" Joe yelled, but Travis and Barney both told him he'd had enough. "Oh, looks like you've got company Joe" Barney pointed to the door where Alana had just walked in. "GOD SHE'S BEAUTIFUL" Joe yelled then blinked, he had meant to whisper that to Barney.

She sighed slightly as she saw just how drunk Joe was then she walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his chest, " Come on, lets go big guy. You've had enough for one night." She wanted to get him out of the bar so he wasn't making an idiot of himself any more but she also did not want him to be difficult about this. " Please.......let's go Joe. You can sleep at my parents house ok?" Alana looked at him as she tried to coax him off the barstool.

"Jus leeet mee settlle my taps" He said, fumbling for his wallet. Travis waved it away. "Just hit me up tomorrow or something Joe, you're too gone to even know what's going on here. Take good care of him alright Alana? Oh and don't think bad of him, this is the first time I've ever seen him this drunk." Joe stumbled to his feet and glared at Travis. "Drunk?! I'll haav you know goood sirr that I am sober as a cow!" With that he collapsed into Alana, groaning slightly. "Okk times to goes."

Alana looked at Travis and nodded some, " I will don't worry. I'll come by tomorrow and settle the bill for him. Have a good night Travis." Her arms went around Joe as he fell into her then she nodded and wrapped her arm around his waist as she led him out to her car. " Easy now. Careful theres a big drop off right here ok?"

She helped to the passenger side of the car then put him in the car, taking extra care because of his leg then she went to the drivers side. Alana climbed in the car and headed back to her parents house with him drunk in the passengers seat. " You feeling ok?"

Even in his drunked state he reveled in the feeling of her arms around him again. Fuck he thought, was he making an ass out of himself in front of her? The tiny part of his pain still running on logic said he was, but the majority of his brain told him that he was doing exactly what he needed to do.

He looked at her through his drunken haze and smiled. "You always were so good at takinng care of mee." He closed his eyes, dizziness overcoming him for a second. "Where arre we goinng? I need to go back and get my trucks." He smiled and leaned into her letting his head rest on her shoulder "'member that night I gots reeal drunkks at Rob's partay?"

Alana looked at him as she pulled into the driveway of her parents house then she climbed out of the car but first made sure he would not fall over. She walked over to the passenger side and opened the door then grabbed his arm and wrapped it around his waist, " Yeah, I remember that night. You did nothing but puke and kept me up all night. You felt so guilty the next day because I was so tired." She laughed some and looked at him. " Come on now, easy does it.Take your time Joe."

Once he was out of the car, she helped inside the house and instantly laid him down on the couch where she had been sleeping. " Stay here." She disappeared into the kitchen and came back with the empty garbage can and sat it next to the couch for him. She handed him some bread, " Eat this ok?" Alana set a glass of water down on the coffee table and sat down next to the couch. She set laid her head on the couch above his and ran her fingers through his hair slowly. " You feel ok?"

Joe stared up at her, feeling like he going to be sick, but wanting to get his thoughts out while they were in his head. "I havent felt ok in a long time." He sighed. "That's not to saay i'm depressed all the time, but things haven't been the same since you left." He concentrated hard on not slurring his words. "I thought I'd done somethinng, that I wasn't good enough for you, I needed to run away so I joined the marines. It was right after 9//1, everyone was joining up, you know how it is aorund her with patriotism... So I signed up.. they sent me into Afghanistan to look for Bin Laden..." His eyes glazed over as he remember. "We were trekking through one of those mountainous areas, we'd had a tip that prominent members of Al-Qaida had hidden up there... they had, but so had an entire regiment of guerillas loyal to them. We were ambushed.. three of the guys I'd trained with went down before I even knew what was happening. Then a mortor exploded right next to me and there was nothing but blackness." He closed his eyes, trying to focus, to be strong. "When I awoke I was in a hospital. They said they had to take my leg or I'd die. Part of me thought aobut what my life had become and just wanted to lay back and die. I didn't think i'd ever see you again." Hie tried to control himself, a single tear slid out of his eye. "They took my left leg and discharged me. My whole life had crumbled. I had lost you, I lost my will to live, for a while I was pretty out of it. But I decided to move on and let myself heal.." he sighed as he gazed down at his leg.

Alana listened to him and sighed softly, she hadn't realized exactly how much pain she had cost him. She wiped away the tear with her thumb then kissed his cheek softly as a few of her tears fell onto his cheek, "You don't have to worry anymore because I'm here now and I'm not leaving again. I love you Joe, I never stopped. I understand that you need time, so do I. I need time to come to terms with how much pain I caused you. I truly deserve for you to hate me. But for right now, I'm going to take care of you" She looked at him then placed her hand on the side of his face with a small smile.

She looked down at his leg then reached over and pulled his pant leg up slightly. "Joe, I don't care if you have a prosthetic leg. It doesn't change how much I love you, it really doesn't. I love every inch of you, including the prosthetic leg." She put her hand on the prosthetic leg to let him know that it really didn't bother her at all.

I walked out through the glass sliding doors unto my deck. I carried a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Standing by the rail. I looked over towards the Johnson's and saw a car parked in the driveway. Must be Alana's, must have come in late last night. Looking at my watch. To early to make a visit. I'll wait untill later in the morning.. It would be good to see her again.[/I I thought to myself.]

I sat at the table and read the paper and sipped my coffee. Shortly I rose and went inside to get another cup of coffee and returned to the table. I looked over towards her house again and again. I could not get her out of my mind.

Andy steps out the front door and looks across the street. There's a car parked in the drive. No one has been there for a while, what five years now. Andy walks over and unlocks his Mustang and climbs in, and starts it up. He looks in the rear veiw mirror. Alana that was her name, he remembers now. Wow, has it been five years. Time to go, I got to get this job!

Joe's voice cracked as he looked up at Alana and listened to her sing the sweet words he desperately wanted to hear. He was too drunk for this conversation, but he was also too drunk to control his mouth. "Why did you run away from me then? Why did you leave me? Why haven't I heard from you for five years? I mean I had to hear you were back in town from my mom." He turned his head, not wanting to b drawn in by those eyes again. Or those lips. "I believe that you love me. And I want to believe that you're back for good. But I have to know Alana. Even if your parents being killed put was a shock why did you run out on us?" Another tear slid down his cheek and he cursed his weakness.

Alana sighed softly and looked at Joe with a slightly frown, " I don't know Joe. I just don't. I never meant for it to last 5 years. I was just going to go for a month or so, just enough time for me to get my mind in order. I felt so broken and vulnerable after that. I didn't want anyone to see me like that. But the month, turned into a year then that year turned into 3. I figured it would be meaningless for me to come back. I figured you had moved on and got married. The only person I actually stayed in contact with was Hayden."

She shrugged some then stood up and grabbed the bottom of his shirt gently so she could pull it off of him. Alana wanted away from that conversation because she couldn't handle seeing him crying and being so emotional. Once she got his shirt off, she undid his pants and pulled those, being extra careful because of his leg. She folded his clothes then set them on the coffee table and pulled the blanket over him. " Good night Joe. Theres a trash can there for when you need throw up and some water. Sleep good."

Alana left the room and ran upstairs to her old bedroom. Once inside the room she instantly sat down on bed and started to cry all the tears she had to hold in while downstairs with Joe.

Andy jumps down the steps of the Administration Building, lands on his bad leg, but the landing was easy, he is in high spirits .I got the job! I'm back in football again. It's different from playing for SMU, I'll be coaching, not playing, high shcool, not college. But what the hell..I'm back in football. I can't wait to tell Nancy!
Andy walks to the parking lot and finds his beloved Red Mustang. Unlocks it and climbs in. Lets check out the practice field first. He drives toward the bleachers and stops at the corner and looks at the the green grass striped with white lines. I can't wait for monday, hey ...maybe I'll take Nancy to the game this weekend.....give me a chance to see the team in action.

Joe sighed as she tried to explain herself and then got up to go to her bedroom. He was too drunk for any of this shit, and in hindsight it was probabl a bad idea. But he still didn't like the way she seemed to be avoiding his questions, if she really did still care about him why wouldn't she be honest with him. He turned over on his side facing the inside of the couch as he lost himself in thought. He still loved her, he knew that. She'd been the only girl on his mind for the last five years. Sure he'd had other relationships, but nothing serious, they'd all fizzled out because he couldn't face geting hurt again. He shut his eyes tight, wishing he could just will away all these problems and go back to a simpler life. He quietly fell asleep while still thinking about her beautiful eyes and wonderful smile.

Hayden

Hayden heard the click of high heels coming down the hallway towards the exam room and turned just in time to see his surprise patient walk through the door. "Holy shit!!" his mind screamed. Standing before him was THE sexiest woman he had ever seen in this one horse town. If he thought the view from the back was killer, then the front was just plain illegal. Hayden nearly dropped the tray of dental tools he had just arranged. He was fairly certain that he did drop his jaw. Granted, while he was away at college he had scored his fair share of hot, blonde sorority girls. Maybe some of them had been in the same league as this girl, but he hadn't seen anything like this since he'd graduated. Doctors are expected to view patients as just that-- patients. Fortunately for Hayden, he was a dentist. It was perfectly acceptable for him to mentally undress a gorgeous woman, patient or not. Of course, he would never take advantage of his position. There were always stories of dentists being caught molesting patients while they were sedated. The thought disturbed him. "After all," he would tell himself, "being a doctor or dentist automatically means that you can get laid just about anytime you want without doing it illegally." And it was true, Hayden had more than his share of "friends with benefits" in town. He figured that most of them really wanted to hook their claws into him and become the dentist's wife, but he was too young and was having too much fun to let that happen right now. Hell, even if he did hit a bit of a dry spell, his always-horny receptionist would always be willing to lend a helping hand, or mouth, or pussy. On occasion she and Hayden had even tag-teamed a lucky lady.
But back to the matter at hand--- standing before Hayden was the living, breathing epitome of sex.

Alana woke up the next morning at around 9 in the morning still a bit groggy from the talk she had Joe. How late had they been awake talking? She sighed softly and shook her head some then walked into the bathroom. " Why can't you tell him the real reason why you left? " She looked at herself in the mirror for a moment then undressed and climbed into the shower. After about 30 minutes, she was walking downstairs in a pair of mens boxers and a white tank top.

She walked over to Joe and looked down at him for a few minutes before gently shaking his shoulder. " Hey, you feeling better? Do you feel sick?" She looked at the trash can she set next to him and was thankful that it was empty. Joe was never any good at holding his liquor, well at least 5 years ago he wasn't.

"Joe..........I left because I didn't you to be with me while I was so torn apart. I was a complete mess but I didn't want to take my grief out on you and I didn't want you to feel like you were stuck with me. I know you loved me no matter but I didn't know that then. I didn't want to be a burden on you. I just hope that one day you can forgive me for hurting you so much." She looked at him then walked into the kitchen silently to make them some breakfast. Of course, she was also making an omelet for Cliff. Her beloved next door neighboor. If anyone was excited to see her, it was Cliff. The man was like a second father to her.

Joe had made it through the night without losing his alcohol, and the pounding headache he had this morning made him wish he hadn't been so rash in getting drunk. He had made a complete ass out of himself in front of Alana, but he didn't know any other way to deal with all these emotions he was being bombarded with. It was as if he'd built up a wall to all this shit after losing his leg, and now that he saw her again his defenses were torn to shred. Joe barely ever cried, but he felt like it was all he'd been doing since he ran into her yesterday evening. Joe hated thinking of himself as weak, he never liked failing at anything, and ever since he lost his leg he'd been even more self-aware of being weak. He didn't want to be seen as that por guy. But now he felt that way. He was too weak to deal with all the stuff happening and so he had resorted to booze.

He listened groggily to Alana's quick explanation, nodding at her that he understood, but she didn't seem to notice, she had already flitted off to the kitchen. Why did she keep leaving him? Joe had rarely gotten a chance to sound off against her explanations. It was like she gave them and just ran off again, afraid to hear what Joe might say. Maybe she just didn't trust him anymore. Or maybe she was just pissed because she had to come pick him up at two in the morning. In any case she didn't seem to be in any mood for him right now. He sighed heavily, working his way to his feet and searching around for the clothing she had removed from him in his drunken state last night. He threw his shirt on and pants on. Trying to be quiet so she wouldn't notice him up and about, but failing miserably as his shaking hands fumbled every task he tried to give them.

The next morning Andy drove over to pick up Nancy and found a note on the door. ANDY, went to the dentist, see you soon.

Went to the dentist? I thought her dentist was Dr. Levin in Sweetwater? She would of taken the bus to Sweetwater....she doesn't go to local dentist...she said...they were too small town...to horney. And the only bus to Sweetwater is at 2pm. What is going on?
