The Crap We Watch

I am watching The Americans, Mister Selfridge, Midsommer murders and Time something- an archaeology show. The last two I watch on Acorn when I am folding clothes.

Poltergeist

I figured it would be done eventually, and I wasn't disappointed. But, will I be?

In 1982, a little thriller/horror flick came out called Poltergeist. It was centered around little Carol Anne, the youngest of three children, who essentially gets kidnapped by confused and/or vengeful spirits who have inhabited the home because it was built atop a graveyard.

At the time I saw it (I was ten at the time), the movie left me shaken. From the cameraman who claws off his own face to the clown doll that attacks Robbie, Poltergeist did a pretty good job of tugging at the "freak strings" of the audience. There was some pretty good acting on the part of Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, and the munchkin paranormal investigator added a little touch of comic relief.

Well, now they've remade it. I've seen two trailers for it, both of which place a good amount of emphasis on the evil clown doll. There are parts of the directing and editing that invoke comparisons to the Paranormal Activity franchise, but that could just be coincidence. The new offering is produced by Sam Raimi.

Of course, one of the things that contributed to the "Poltergeist mystique" was the fact that four of its cast members died shortly after the films were released. Dominique Dunne (daughter of author Dominick Dunne; she played the oldest daughter) died just months after the original Poltergeist was released, and Heather O'Rourke, who played Carol Anne in all three movies, died just before Poltergeist III was released (there's a dedication to O'Rourke in the credits of the film). Supporting actors from Poltergeist II also died in relatively short spans of time following the film's release.

It's hard to match that kind of urban legend mystique with a remake. But then, if someone on the new cast kicks the bucket . . . .

The film comes out May 22nd. I've added it to my list of must-sees.

CSI Cyber...

Okay, I've watched 8 episodes so far. Not bad, but not up to par with the original CSI. Patricia Arquette is a little stiff. James Van Der Beek is a little over the top. All in all not all that bad, but I doubt it will be winning any Emmys.

I don't really expect to see this one on a season 2, but I could be wrong. I was about Under the Dome which I quit watching after three episodes. I go bored.

Don't watch much TV...but when I do....

Its usually a show that's been around awhile or finished and I watch the full seasons.

Started Supernatural a month ago and I'm in season six show is great, a lot of campy stuff, humor, but mixed in with some heavy story lines and creepiness. "Sam and Dean" are great together you really get the impression they could be brothers in real life.

I think its great that this was started as a toss away show witha couple of no name actors on a nothing network and its ten years later and it has a huge cult following.

On the other side of things I have given up on Game of Thrones. Its season five...mo war with the zombies, Dragon queen is still farting around in some city in shitsville and the "intrigue" is running in circles.

That and Martin has admitted he is struggling to finish the books, already called it that there will not be one this year...this thing may get left in limbo

Do you mean "Time Team" ?
3 days of intense digging, trenches and experts to see just what is, or rather was, down there? Good programme, I reckon.

I see there's a bit of a row breaking out in the 'providers' arena:

ESPN sues Verizon: People picking their own TV channels? NOOoo!
Take a look HERE.

One of the reasons I don't have satellite TV is because I see no valid reason to pay for programmes I have no interest in. For example, 'Home & Lifestyle' crap, 'American sports' or continental Football.
I'd rather choose the channels /shows I want, not a bundle.

Free Speech TV is about all I watch except for "The Rifleman" I used to have (maybe still do) a boycrush on Johnny Crawford

Years ago, Cablevision acquired the other cable provider in the area that I lived in. Under my old provider, certain channels, such as MSG, were part of the basic package. Once Cablevision took over, they added them to a sports package that you needed to pay extra for. Their rationale was that it wasn't fair to those that didn't want sports to make them subsidize those that did.

Of course, when I called and told them what specific channels I wanted, I was told I couldn't do that. I had to purchase whatever packages they were offering. But I don't want those channels. Why do I have to subsidize those people that do? Of course, they had no answers for that.

Neither the networks nor the cable providers really want to go to a model where people pick individual stations or programs. At the end of the day, people will watch less under that model, and there will be less revenue. No one wants it, but the technology and customer demand will dictate that it becomes a reality. That's already happening.

I am watching The Americans.

I keep seeing teasers for this series on BBCA and wonder if it's worth the time to watch it. I might give it a go, since I seem to have some time before the next bevy of episodes of Sherlock and The Strain air . . . .

I use to always ask the cable provider why I couldn't block the channels I didn't what to see like I could on my TV.

On my TV I could delete channels I didn't want to be bothered with. On the cablebox, you can't do that. I really should have a say as to which channels display on my TV. It would be a lot easier flipping through the channels I do want to see.

It's excellent. Season 3 just concluded. You may still be able to get those episodes On Demand if your provider has that capability. Seasons 1 and 2 are on Amazon Prime, I believe. It's one of the best shows on TV right now--well worth your time.

You should be able to program your remote control with only the channels you want to flip through. You can use the favorites menu for that.

And how the hell do you have time to write anything?

We have a new one on our favorites, watching a few episodes at a time--Turn: Washington's Spies. It's based on the well-researched novel by Alexander Rose. Unlike so many costume dramas of late (i.e. Reign--<hack/spit/gurgle>) it is beautifully accurate in appearance and well-acted. After 4 episodes I haven't been thrown out of the story by some glaring flaw. We're watching season 1 on Netflix. Season 2 is currently airing on AMC.

Streaming library...

Mon. Scorpion, NCIS: LA
Tue. NCIS, NCIS NO, Person of Interest, Agents of Shield, Perception, Forever, The Flash, Agent Carter
Wed. CSI Cyber
Thr. Elementary, Bones, Backstrom, Big Bang Theory
Fri. Blue Bloods, Last Man Standing, The Last Ship
Sat. Doctor Who
Sun. Madam Secretary, The Librarians

Tue. is a busy night.

I just added iZombie.

We watch for maybe 2 hours a day total?

And I type fast!

You must. ;)

I haven't heard of iZombie, but I'm not a zombie fan anyway. I've worked with enough of them; I don't need to see them get chopped up in innovative ways. :p

I have caught a few episodes of Turn here and there. It is, for the most part, historically accurate and I like the characters. The actor who plays Washington is pretty compelling.

Yeah, I imagine it would be. The only thing I see on Tuesdays is Face/Off when it's on.

Ex Machina

Just saw the movie - stark, disturbing and captivating noir sci fi paying homage to the singularity. Quite credible. Left me with just enough to think about.

Just finished watching Jupiter Ascending on YIFY tv. It was alright, not the blockbuster it was touted to be. Mila was okay as what Tatum...there were some cast members that were stiff and just phoning in their performances.

It was entertaining, yet the ending was a little flat.

Game of Thrones is still on our must-see list. My husband has read all the books (I haven't), and he has confirmed that already the show is going in directions the books don't. So even if Martin is struggling to finish, I don't think the show's writers will be in limbo. I love the characters, the intrigue, the subtle stuff as well as the action. Still loving it :D

Outlander, lots of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, Big Bang Theory (haven't watched the most recent ones, though). Need to sit down and watch season 2 of Orange is the New Black, and I've heard The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is really good, gotta check that one out.

I'm currently watching Other Space. Pretty funny, like a more character-focused Red Dwarf.

Hmm . . . .

After the first ten minutes, with fart jokes, multiple neurotic references, and too many character flaws exposed and repeatedly harped upon . . . gotta say this is what you get when Americans try to emulate British comedy.

I love Red Dwarf. Unfortunately, sir, this is no Red Dwarf.

Kind of had that same response at first, I'll admit, but it grew on me. (Come to think of it... Red Dwaf had to do the same thing, actually.)
