I went to get milk today and my eyes bugged out when I saw it was $4/gallon! When the hell did that happen? (Eggs too, although they're still a bargin.)

I filled my gas tank the other day for $2.87/gallon which was the lowest I've seen since Memorial Day.
(Check gas prices near you)

What are the prices of 'staples' in your area?(or not so staple-y)

(Boston prices here.)

Don't know about the milk, but for about $ 2.78 we get only about 2 liters of regular fuel here; price for gas (for cars) is somewhat lower, but there is no way we can fill up the tank for $ 2.78!

Opps, I should have said $2.87 PER gallon on the gas issue -- I wasn't thinking very international obviously.

Milk was $3.99 a gallon when my husband bought some today. Because the kids are big milk drinkers, we go through 4-6 gallons a week.

The average price for gas in our area in $2.87.

Southern Illinois here
Gas: $2.92
Milk: $3.78 for the name brand skim; $2.87 for the store brand

gas - regular 2.69/gallon
eggs - $1.63/dozen
milk - 3.68/gallon

One of the stories I used to tell my students was that my grandmother would send me to the neighborhood store and tell me to get a half gallon of milk, a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs. Her last words as she handed me a dollar was not to spend her change! It was a good introduction to cost of living. Of course all they wanted to know was what year was I in the 8th grade!

Gas - $2.83/gallon
Milk - $3.29/gallon (Barbers @ Walgreens, everywhere else in town is pushing/over $4)
Eggs - $1.19/dozen (again @ Walgreens, everywhere else in town is around $1.50)

We've yet to figure out how that one store is so much cheaper than everything else in town *shrugs*

Chicagoland prices here:

Gas: $3.29 per gallon

Eggs: $1.80 per dozen

Milk: $3.99 per quart (this is for ordinary skim milk at the grocery store but I usually buy from a dairy at $2.50 per half gallon to get milk without growth hormones or pesticides)

I got a real price shock the other day when I went to send out a small package by overnight delivery. The cost of sending even a letter by overnight mail is now nearly $25 when it was only about $14 before the latest postage rate hike in May.

I'll give ya sticker shock! I just picked up my new glasses. Nothing special, no fancy frames or anything...$549!!!! I'd give my left nut for vision insurance right now!

Even better, someone brought me a proposal for a new postage printer yesteday. $12,000!!!! For a fancy inkjet printer!?!?!?! For 12 grand it better blow me while I'm sending out a mailing!

Oh, and gas here is $3.10/gallon. That sucks too! :(

You guys have it lucky as far as gasoline is concerned

In Alberta (one of the lowest priced areas in Canada for gasoline) the price is about $1.10cdn/litre or $3.96us/gallon(us). We haven't seen gas as cheap as you have it for a couple of years now.

A dozen Grade A large eggs is about $1.50cdn ($1.42us)

a 4 litre jug of 1% milk (1.06 gal(us) cost us about $4.00cdn ($3.81us)

Our milk and eggs seem in line with your prices to the south....but our gasoline is ridiculously high. Especially so when you consider that Alberta, Canada has greater reserves of oil than Saudi Arabia {sigh} ... it is all in the taxes (federal and provincial) placed on gasoline.

The big surge in prices here in Calgary is apartment rent. I live in a bachelor apt..in a 14 story block with a swimming pool (1/3 olympic size), exercise room, near a major shopping centre and mass transit. 2 years ago I paid $590/month including heat, electricity and underground parking....Canadian pricing $1cdn = $0.95us. not bad....

Last year my rent jumped to $675cdn/month and I received my new lease notice and expect it to jump again to $850-$900/month....what the F#@!

With the activity boom in the oil and gas industry we have a high influx of workers....driving up rental pricing...no rent controls in place but I'd sure like to see them

In Denmark the cheapest gas price is US$7.02/gallon

I don't know what eggs are, or milk to be honest.

We in the US have been spoiled with the cost of gas but I still complain, especially when profits are in the billions PER quarter! I know exploring new sources etc costs but billions per quarter is excessive profit taking to me.

I have curtailed my use to some extent. I book multiple appointments when possible, haven't done a 'Sunday drive' in a while (although I feel a big one coming up, just to get away from summer people and tourists), I think a bit more about going places and being more sensible even for errands. My car-fixing guys think I need to get out more!

Yank, $4 a quart? Holy Moly. I stopped at another store and they had milk on sale for $3/gallon so I bought 2, I love milk so I don't have to worry about expiration dates.

Kahuna, I bought glasses last year and they were close to $600, they're 'Progressives' but I said for that price they should give me bionic sight for that price!

It is amazing how much stuff costs. I'm about to find out how much a new cell phone plan will be - I still have analog believe it or not but I only have to the end of the year before they shut off all services. I just want a phone that I can dial, maybe take a picture now and again and that SHUTS OFF! I am so sick of people doing everything while talking -- yes, this from an admitted chatter box. I won't talk to people if they are driving, if they're in the grocery store etc., I suppose it's because I can no longer do two things at once. ;)

A woman in my book group is fond of sneering at another member and me because we have more vehicles than licensed drivers in our household.

Of course, our old truck, the vehicle that gets the lowest MPG, is the one that we drive the least, maybe once every two weeks on a good month, as my husband drives it only when he needs to haul something that won't fit (or don't want to put) in our cars. We've had it for about 15 months and we've filled up the gas tank fewer than 10 times--that's how little we use it!

We've been cutting back on whole-family trips, thus not having to fill up the mom-wagon as much. When we run errands, we use our high-MPG small car.

Phoenix AZ checking in

Gas: At my Quik Trip store it's $2.82 per gallon; Costco is usually 5 cents cheaper per gallon.

Milk: Safeway's Lucerne brande is 4.99 a gallon and they often sell buy one get one free. I drink a lot of milk, but I don't like to buy 2 gallons at a time because of the expiration date. If you ask Safeway for half off the gallon, they will give it to you, so I bought a gallon of skim for $2.50.

No idea about eggs as I rarely buy a dozen.

Ontario, Canada

Ontario Canada here..

Gas: $1.03 a liter

Milk: $4.69 for four liters

Eggs:$1.99 a dozen

Around here..NYC...gas is going for anywhere from $3.13 up to $3.31. I cant believe the disparity. Are some people so greedy they have to rip people off to make a profit? Thats one reason I refuse to buy from Exxon/Mobile unless its an emergency then I only buy enough to get to someplace cheaper.

Heres a good site to find cheap gas in your area...

http://www.gasbuddy.com/

Oh I very rarely buy milk or eggs so I have no idea what they cost here.

I knew there was a reason I wanted to move back to Phoenix...cheaper gas LOL. When did Safeway come into Phoenix? I moved like 9 1/2 yrs ago and dont remember them having any stores then...

I moved here in August of '98 and shopped mainly at Frys, so I couldn't tell you for sure, but I've been mainly a Safeway shopper since 2000-2001. They have phenomenal customer service and that's worth my money.

yank, the mrs sees to the groceries so i have no idea how much they cost.
