The Construction Thread

You should see what a big-ass mine truck does to a pickup when it rolls over it. Stay way away from the big-ass mine trucks.

I would love to see that, does that make me a dumb fuck? When I was young I was working on a bridge and a big scraper ran over my friends tool box. It was so completely squashed that you could see the outline of a hammer and crescent wrench in the smashed box. I laughed until I cried.

I saw one at a Diamond mine in Canada. There was no laughing.

Of course if there was an injury that's sad and a different situation. On another bridge job, a state inspector was backed into a small blind spot, and a huge scraper backed over the hood, absolutely flattened the body and frame and destroyed one front tire. The inspector saw it coming as was able to get out in plenty of time, and just watched it happen.

Herbert Hoover: Madam, I'm an engineer.

Lady: "Oh dear, but I thought you were a gentleman."

Construction is going pretty well around here. A client of mine is building a mixed-use development and a local University has already agreed to pay the rent on 75% of the apartments when built. That's some fine negotiating right there.

There's a lot of half built stuff in ND that one could truck down there and finish.

Are they buying Chinese bolts?

This article is troubling since the newly opened San Francisco Bay bridge was mostly fabricated in China and has had numerous problems with the bolts used to counter seismic events. Its not understandable why we would sub out a huge jog like that to China when there are fabricators in the US capable of the same work.

Don't forget the Chinese welders who ran off when approached by the CalTrans welding inspectors because they did not have proper qualifications. I think of this every time I drive over that fucking low-bid piece of shit bridge.
