The United States has sunk $500 million over the last decade into training and equipping Niger’s armed forces, which have now overthrown the democratically-elected president of the country.

Nigerien armed forces declared that they removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power amid a coup that began last Wednesday, spearheaded by a general who studied at the Department of Defense-backed College of International Security Affairs, Reuters reported. The U.S. has spent $500 million on training and arming Nigerien soldiers and stationing more than 1,000 U.S. troops in the region, according to the U.S. Embassy in Niger.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said over the weekend that the U.S. partnership with Niger is in “clear jeopardy.”

“Our economic and security partnership with Niger, which is significant, hundreds of millions of dollars, depends on the continuation of the democratic governance and constitutional order that has been disrupted by the actions in the last few days,” Blinken said at a press conference on Saturday. “So that assistance, that support, is in clear jeopardy as a result of these actions, which is another reason why they need to be immediately reversed.”

US law prohibits foreign aid to any country where an elected leader has been removed by coup.

Yes, we spent decades in Africa gaining favor to establish relations.

Then 45 dismantled that diplomatic presence in less than 4 years.

The waste was that we pulled out of the country and let Russia and China in.

I have a thread on this already

Don't confuse Reichguide with facts. Totally uncool.

Just let China take over the role of 'Leader of the Free World'.

At least they tend to involve themselves in other countries without actually invading them.

Either you're a leader or you're not. Guess what? It takes money to lead.

Isolationism is not a productive strategy for America's interests.
Oh? How did America start, beyond the native population? A lot of the European immigrants were criminals and heretics leaving Europe, particularly from Britain and Germany, to journey to the "new world" in order to practice their religion and/or to "get rich". That attitude is still very clear in US culture today. Only now, instead of going away to escape the "old world" (like up to the 1890s or so) it's become a way to dominate the whole world instead.

And when you say "America's interests", you are talking about the interests of the billionaires in America, not the interests of the working class or middle class. The billionaires drive down wages, outsource jobs to cheaper labor areas.

You're a broken record.

All of America benefits from globalism and global diplomacy. Even the ones you like.

The working class and middle class do not benefit from their wages being driven down, the lack of nationalized healthcare free at the point of use, the lack of strong welfare, the Orwellian named "right to work" laws etc. The billionaires get even fatter as a result.

Without globalism, the majority of items we have access to today wouldn't be available....food, tech, auto.

Wages are an issue, but it'd be worse without the.global.economy.

But keep on fighting your rich vs poor war....it's.much easier to blame than the more complex reality of the world.

The way that you see things is false, and I'm not proposing to "end the global economy". It's class war (i.e. big business capitalism vs. working class socialism and its labor movement, and not "globalism vs. localism"). The Democratic and Republican Parties are both on the side of big business capitalism, even though the Republicans are more parochial, openly bigoted and narrow minded with it. Any talk of the "national interest" means what is in the interest of US billionaires, not ordinary Americans. It's time that this sham was ended.

You're simple minded and your positions reflect that.

I think the angle missed by the right on foreign policy is that China is winning by their foreign policies around the world. The right seems to think the only way to beat them is to meet them head-on. The reality is that beating them in Africa has a larger impact than anything we do in Taiwan.

A complete waste of our taxpayer dollars by power mad billionaires.
The same situation in Haiti is developing as we speak. Ignorant wild-ass mobs are busy burning their shithole down. The US Embassy is on alert and has ordered staff and US citizens to leave the country. No matter how much money and effort you throw at the place, nothing changes.

You are a pompous asshole.

The embassy is now closed and the barbarous chaos continues, you whimpering apologist.
There are many issues in Haiti that have gone on for decades.....but please,.oversimplify it

More like centuries. In the early 19th century, Haiti became the only place where a successful slave rebellion took place to the very end against imperialist occupiers, something not even Spartacus and his followers achieved. The imperialists, French initially and the US later, could never forgive the Haitians. Having been beaten militarily, they strangled the independent Haiti with all sorts of financial debt.

Adding together decades gets you centuries eventually.

Most issues like the Haitians have involves occupation of some sort. Same with most of Africa. The South African thread and this one reveal a similar approach of explaining them from the "racialists"
