I am a recent convert to the sport of football. All those years with three big brothers and a dad watching sports day and night must have triggered something. Go figure. Anyway, my question is this:

Why do they call it The Big Ten when there are 11 teams? Am I missing something here? Or do colleges have no need of mundane things such as counting?

Good Question

Hell, I'm still pissed than the Big 8 is now the Big 12.

If they add another, will it be the Big Baker's Dozen?

Maybe the should add Baker University. Aren't they the fighting mud daubers or something?

The Big Ten was originally 10 teams until the current big money era of college athletics pushed erstwhile Penn. St. into the conference for a share of the bucks. They apparently didn't want to change the name of the conference because "Big 11" obviously doesn't sound as good.

Tradition. It's been the Big Ten for about ninety years.
