The Beast's Pub Trivia

I did not know that HB.

Excellent answer. Full marks for that.

How many sectors was Berlin divided into and can you name them?

I should probably try to ask questions that are more challenging for a historian 🤪

Who was the youngest ever winner of the men’s singles final at Wimbledon?

Mind if I ask one?

What object, which formerly belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte, was bought by an American urologist in 1977?

Hungarian is part of the Finno-Ugric group which means its closest languages are Finnish and Estonian.

What language is the Basque language (Euskara) most closely related to?
The Basques lives in Spain and France, and I believe Euskara is most closely related to French.

True or false: The United States has at least one official language?

Well damn, if there's one question here I should know.

Schwartz, rot, und gelb.

Which countries comprised the 6 founding member states of the EU?
Not Googling:
France, Germany, Austria,Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark

How did I do?

Wrong I’m afraid regarding the Basques, They are surrounded by French and Spanish speakers, but Euskara is not in any way related to those languages.

The Basque language is unrelated to any other language spoken in the world. Amazing!
Wow! You know your languages Anastasia. The Basque language is considered to be an ‘isolate‘ language because it is not related to any other language. But there are still arguments going on over that one.

False

What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

False

What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?
There are a lot of differences, but the main one is that tortoises live on land while turtles mostly live in water. Tortoises have heavy, helmet-shaped shells while turtles have lighter, flatter and more streamlined ones. And while all tortoises are turtles, not all turtles are tortoises. (Just like all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.)

In the centre of Berlin sits the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe designed by American architect Peter Eisenman. The memorial consists of 2,711 concrete slabs or stelae. Why 2,711?

Since no one has taken a crack at this, I’ll give the answer and free up the bottleneck. There is no significance to the number 2,711. It was simply the number of stelae that could fit in given the size of the space available. Now that wasn’t so difficult, was it?

Thanks for answering. I was wondering about that myself. I will be there this weekend, it is a very moving memorial indeed.

You’re most welcome. It is indeed very moving, I was there 10-12 years ago and have also had the privilege of studying it academically in an architecture course at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. I think I mentioned that I’m trying to put together sort of a Holocaust tour of Germany and possibly Poland in the next year. Does this mean you live in Berlin?

There's written evidence from the second century BC for what is a now-extinct language, probably related to Basque. It seems to share vocabulary (including numbers) and also some grammar (which I won't bore you with).

"Basque separatists" still sound like people unlacing corsets to me. Can't help it.
That’s quite fascinating. Do they know where the language was spoken? I’ve lived in Spain for the past eight years, but have only been to the Basque Country once and that was when I still lived in Canada. Would love to go again.
