Wow! You know your languages Anastasia. The Basque language is considered to be an ‘isolate‘ language because it is not related to any other language. But there are still arguments going on over that one.

There are a lot of differences, but the main one is that tortoises live on land while turtles mostly live in water. Tortoises have heavy, helmet-shaped shells while turtles have lighter, flatter and more streamlined ones. And while all tortoises are turtles, not all turtles are tortoises. (Just like all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.)

Since no one has taken a crack at this, I’ll give the answer and free up the bottleneck. There is no significance to the number 2,711. It was simply the number of stelae that could fit in given the size of the space available. Now that wasn’t so difficult, was it?

You’re most welcome. It is indeed very moving, I was there 10-12 years ago and have also had the privilege of studying it academically in an architecture course at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. I think I mentioned that I’m trying to put together sort of a Holocaust tour of Germany and possibly Poland in the next year. Does this mean you live in Berlin?

There's written evidence from the second century BC for what is a now-extinct language, probably related to Basque. It seems to share vocabulary (including numbers) and also some grammar (which I won't bore you with).

"Basque separatists" still sound like people unlacing corsets to me. Can't help it.

That’s quite fascinating. Do they know where the language was spoken? I’ve lived in Spain for the past eight years, but have only been to the Basque Country once and that was when I still lived in Canada. Would love to go again.
