yayati said:but you must know your own language first whether its hindi marathi bengali gujarati tamil telugu whatever
if you are so patriotic towards your own country why dont you go back there instead of hiding in england and crying about how people have been so bad to you and your forefathers .yayati said:Guys I need all of your opinions on something that really pisses me off. its kinda long, but pls read and give your comments/suggestions:
In a recent editorial in the desi magazine chitralekha, I read about the efforts of a Bombay school teacher to teach her students english. Her argument was that the best way to learn a language is to practice speaking it first; reading & writing are secondary.
My point is: ain't it really sad that after 55 years of independence, so much importance is placed on learning the language of our one-time invaders. ppl born here might not know this but in India being fluent in English is a status symbol, whats more it is implicit that if u want to be a part of the "high society" then you have to speak almost exclusively in english. I understand that this is the state of affairs in every previous British colony. But what's wrong with our own languages? Is this not a blatant example of our slavish mentality? The west has already taken over as far as clothing etc. Cannot our languages be saved?
I know the major reason is that english is the most recognized language internationally, whats more,if you wanna go to amrika in the future, its really beneficial to start learning how to speak with the proper pronunciations etc. since childhood. I myself was guilty of harboring the same mentality (learning english is a sign of high upbringing etc.). have finally seen the light.
What do you guys think of this? what if anything can be done to keep indians from thinking like this? Wouldn't you admit that something should be done to stop India's "brain drain" (ppl migrating to other countries-indirect effect)? Or must we think that there is no hope until india itself becomes prosperous enough to keep its homegrown intellect home? How much longer will we have to wait before India decides to establish its own identity?
