The Author's Hangout Valentine's Day 2012 Support Thread

Welcome to the one and only "The Author's Hangout Valentine's Day 2012 Support Thread"

Please come on in and enjoy.

Any other Contest thread you might see is a fake so don't be fooled.

I don't usually ask for votes on my stories but always ask for comments. I don't usually tell readers if my stories are in a contest. It seems in the last few contests that I've lost less vote than I did a year ago. I remember losing votes by the hundreds. Dark probably has some of the old records.

Lately they seem more under control but I expet to loose some, and not all ones and twos. I've figured out through Darks mathmatics that some of the so called trolls are firing out threes instead of ones. They can do a lot of damage and probably don't get swept.

I'm through posting for this contest. Just sitting back and ready to watch the roller coaster. Best of luck to all of you.
With respect

Those large numbers of votes you lost back when were set up to keep a certain someone from sticking out like a sore thumb or several sore thumbs. :D

In Author's notes, I sometimes ask folks to read, vote, comment, it depends on what I'm thinking about when I write the author comment. Sometimes I say, feedback is appreciated and don't mention voting.

For the contests, yeah, I mention it, usually in my signature and in a couple of my threads over on the PG forum. It's a contest and I would like to win, though the likelihood is almost nil, so I advertise. lol :D

No sense in letting all the IPs Manu has captured and quarantined go to waste when he can use them for some nefarious activity, even if they're no longer useful to 5-vote his own stories.

Note for anybody speed ( or otherwise failing to ) read. We're not talking about DG here.

Heh... I see what I accidently did there. DG here. I'm easily amused. Sue me.

We're talking about someone else, who likes to ride on the coattails of popular authors in hopes of picking up scraps.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's taking a long time for new stories to post. I'm on five days for my last submission and it's getting annoying. Oh well, patience was never one of my virtues.

As for promoting my stories, worrying about trolls, or even setting big swings in my votes, I'm too new to this site to worry about it. Still, at this point I'm curious to see what will happen after these notorious sweeps.

I'm beginning to think the survivor contest might be the simplest one on here. Count the posts and you're done.

Sad to think participating in the author forums can be a negative. I've always found fellow erotic authors to be a fun group of wackos. Oh well, whatever. i've never been good at being anything except me. So far, this site has given my stories more eyeballs and more diverse feedback than I every received from my old blogs and old journals.

Survivor really isn't that bad at all, it's the politics that gets crappy - much like politics in other contests. I like it, mainly because I can list all my stuff in one place, and look back to see what I've accomplished for that year. Also, it lets me stretch my imagination. :D

A variety of "eyeballs" is very good for a writer, in my opinion. :)

The one I released before my contest entry took 6 days to post.

The sweeps for the most part are a good thing, they only really effect you if you're doing something you're not supposed to be.

Or like Dark said you have some "dedicated" fans doing you more harm than good.

as for participating in the forums and the fall out in the contest where people can;t vote on each others stories, that is pretty much the reult of only a couple of people (but they each have alts numbering legion so it seems like more) too bad really because the majority of the people here, even some of troll types are for the most part not cheaters.

Here's the track for tonight.

5 new stories brings us up to 70. One new category in the mix as well.

The average score is now 4.22 with a median of 4.27

The average number of votes is 239 with a median of 184 and a total of 15,291

The average number of views is 12,237 with a median of 8,652 and a total of 795,422

The average favs are 5 with a median of 4 and a total of 350

The average PCs are 9 with a median of 5 and a total of 582

Caught a fumble-finger error in the vote column from yesterday and fixed it.

In just a few minutes, it will be down to the last 24 hours to submit and be eligible for the contest.

Craziness

I'm reading through all the 'problems' with votes and it blows me away to hear that. I rarely get hit by haters (at least those that comment), and that seems to hold true with this one too. Maybe it is because the mm story I posted is a short story that ties into my 3 story ongoing trilogy, but I'm seeing fairly usual scores for my stories and only a 1/4 or so increase in overall reads for a full short story. I do have more votes than usual.

It is sad that anyone feels so strongly about stories or authors that they'd stoop to being nasty or underhanded. I'm with the member who said, 'don't say anything at all' if you don't like something. Unless you can give constructive crit, what's the point?

Advertising is quite often exactly what I tell authors to do on the sites I admin, especially for contests. I liken it to a book sitting on the shelf with 50 other books of a similar genre. How do you make yours stand out when all the reader can do is see the title and author name? Other than a catchy title, you can't. You have to get it out there by commenting in the story, your profile, any forum that allows you to mention it, and so on.

Another way of ensuring readers is to do what I did, and post a story that continues or ties into a story/series that already has a large fan base. Either way, it seems that being in the contest, no matter if you win or not, is a good way to get your writing more readers and fans.

It is sad but you have to realize that this is a free site so a lot of people come here. Yes, there are trolls and some unethical writers that low ball vote. The old addage, "If you can't beat them, then at least hurt them".

This site also allows (with your choice) for readers to comment. Good or bad, at least you raised emotions enough for a comment. I may think differenly than most but I write strickly for fun. When it stops being fun I will just stop. There are a lot of good people (writers) on this site who are very helpful. I'm proud to say that I've known them. There are also a few bad apples that spoil it for others.

Dark, I know you weren't talking about me so I won't have to sue you. LOL You're a good person and one of the most helpful on this site. I've learned a lot about this site because of you. 'Thank you'!

Time to try and think up some kind of stories before the people who read my stories forget about me.

OK, so that's my two submissions for the Valentine's Day competition up. Wonder how the second (Ellie and the Great Cupid Heist) will do. It's tongue-in-cheek comedy, which can be rather hit and miss, and the sex comes in only two-thirds of the way through.

Now that mine are up, I can start reading other people's without fear of it subconciously influencing what I was writing (i.e. unintentionally nicking their ideas!).

P.S. on the technical front, how can detecting multiple voting by IP address work? I thought that every time I switch my broadband modem back on (and it's turned off most nights for reasons of saving power and quenching these damned flickering lights that make the room look like a disco once the main room lights are off) I am assigned a new IP address from the pool of dynamic address owned by my ISP. Am I wrong about that?

I must admit to being pleasantly surprised when I clicked open my figures for my contest story this morning. Very surprised in fact! I’d been afraid that having the lead character suck his own penis might not resonate with my readers.

I was expecting a much lower vote total (it’s a 4 page story) and a much lower score – somewhere in the 3.5-4.0 range.

And yet ended up with triple the votes I’d expected and a very respectable score. I think it just shows that the A.I.R. and the LITEROTICA reading public is open to just about anything as long as it’s well written.

THANKS!!!!!

That's why I suspect the sweeps in contests are so bone-cutting. In order to eliminate those type of tricks to multi-vote, the sweeps probably search back at least a full octet and consider all of those as coming from the same source.

Unfortunately, that means that if you and your neighbor both vote on a story, only one of them probably counts.

For all we know, the votes could be tracking more information from the cookies as well. Your IP may not be the only giveaway.

I'm not going to make it for this contest.

All three of my possible drafts have run into messy difficulties that need major rewrites. The muses are being awkward. :(

Too many Muses spoil the pot, uh, plot. ;)

Damn. Looks like I won't be able to cut it in time, either. Too bad, too, because it was a really sweet story. I think I'll be able to have it ready for Valentine's day itself, but not the contest. :(

It will still do pretty well. I missed the Halloween contest in 2010 by a couple of days, but put the story out for Halloween and it had great vote and view titles. Whether its a contest or not people still love the themed stories.

Agreed, and for the first time I'm actually happier if they're happening more frequently, as my poor innocent non-contest chapter has been 1-bombed for no apparent reason. Never really had that on any other posting so far, so assuming it's exuberance of down-voting fans...we don't get too many trolls in Romance.

Actually, it's from posting on this thread. A certain someone takes delight in bombing anyone who posts here. He sees us all as threats. According to him, it is our fault that he has never placed in a contest. Not placing in a contest is the fault of his crappy writing but his ego won't let him realize that.

Though the resulting gang-bang could be rather a-Muse-ing

I'm not sure, at my advanced age, whether I can cope with nine at once.

(I'm not sure I could have done when I was younger either. Two, three, perhaps if they were cooperative. More? Unlikely.)

My computer has ended any chance I had. It has died and will need professional assistance tomorrow. I'm reduced to an ancient laptop and the three current drafts are on the main computer's hard drive.

I have online back-ups as at midnight Saturday, but they need too much work to make into reasonable stories. Earth day perhaps? Once I've untangled the Muses.

Mystery solved then! :)

It's funny though, I was doing some research in the Amazon Kindle forums this afternoon - except for a lack of raunchy excerpts, the discussions were pretty much identical in nature to the ones on Lit! All the same paranoia, , feuding, backbiting and backstabbing :)

All the paranoia, feuding, backbiting and backstabbing here comes from mainly one person. The rest of the people who post here seem to get along fine. The odd man out, has an agenda of pulling the AH and the contests down. He has made it his life's work so to speak.
