Dark how do you figure the median vs. the average? Also when you say new stories, are you saying just the ones posted on that particular day? I find it all quite interesting.Got caught up in fixing some webpages to properly validate under xhtml strict and almost forgot to run the track tonight
Four new stories brings us up to 36, and we added one more category today as well.
The average score is now 4.31 with a median of 4.32.
The average vote total is 240 with a median of 176 and a total of 7678.
The average views total is 12,816 with a median of 8,876 and a total of 410,115.
The average favorites are 7 with a median of 4 and a total of 208.
The average PCs are 10 with a median of 6 and a total of 335.
( Keep in mind that I'm only updating Views, Favs, and PCs on the new stories each day. Those numbers will jump quite a bit the first time I do a full check of those stats on all stories )
Thanks Dark! It's interesting. Needless to say my stories are all over the place. One is actually at the Average or median.New stories are those that have posted since I tracked the day before.
Although, when I'm talking about which stories I'm updating views, PCs, and favs for, that would be the stories that were "new" on yesterday's track. It takes about 24 hour for most data you can gather to be useful. The exceptions are PCs and Favs, which seem to update on a near real-time basis.
The average and median are simple. The spreadsheet calculates it for me.
Average is all entries for a stat added together, then divided by the number of stories.
Median is the "middle number" of the statistic I'm calculating. Using score as an example, it means that there are exactly as many scores that are higher than the median as there are scores lower than the median.
There's still time left!
Remember, this is the official support thread. Accept no imitations.![]()
I hope SA PennLady, Threadmistress extraordinare, is working on an entry. I guess LunaEroticaMystica, NT, is, unhappily, on the Disabled List. Hope to see her back posting soon.
Did you submit your story yesterday, or did it take a day or two?
Thanks Dark! It's interesting. Needless to say my stories are all over the place. One is actually at the Average or median.
With respect

That means there are either a few stories above 12,804 with substantial views OR quite a few stories with substantially fewer than 8,876.The average views are 12,804 with a median of 8,876 and a total of 460,958
and YOUR number of views are 48,616 - then you know you're screwing up the curve for everyone else. The average views are 12,804 with a median of 8,876 and a total of 460,958
For those who need the math help...
It maybe worth noting the differences between "mean" and "median." In Dark's fine calculations, it's safe to say by "average," he means "mean." (The word "mean," in a mathematical sense, has a more precise meaning than the word "average.")
Median means "middle" score. So, if the scores are like this:
1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, then the median score is 3, because that's right in the middle.
In this same example, the "mean" (what most people think of as average) score would be: 2.77.
Here's why "mean" and "median" are important to compare. When the two disagree is a big way, it means something is skewing the numbers.
For example, when Dark reports That means there are either a few stories above 12,804 with substantial views OR quite a few stories with substantially fewer than 8,876.
So what's this mean to the typical viewer of the numbers? Here's a simple way to think about it. IF your vote, score, views, favs or PCs are above the median - it means you're in the top 50%
How far into the top 50% are you? That's where you want to compare your information to the average.
For example, if views are listed like this: and YOUR number of views are 48,616 - then you know you're screwing up the curve for everyone else.
So what's that mean? Probably that posted to a more popular section of Literotica, that's all.
Don't lose heart, because a story that hasn't been posted for long hasn't had a chance to gain as many views as a story that's been up for a while. As others have pointed out, story views tend to level off the longer a story has been up.
I'm sure there's someone else who can explain this better. My college Statistics class was 30 years ago, but hopefully this helps?
Okay, I have one week to get my two stories finished, edited and posted, I'd better get busy.![]()
:caning: Cracking the whip...hope it wasn't too hard.![]()
Oh, great. Now I won't be able to sit in front of my keyboard.I'll have to type standing up while my muse is laughing at me.

Thanks, kind sir. I had hoped to have an entry done, and wrote something, but my beta reader pointed out some basic issues and I simply haven't had time to fix it up. So I will have to pass this time. Writing time seems to just be impossible to come by these days.
SA PennLady, sorry to hear that. I was looking forward to seeing you and LunaEroticaMystica, NT, in the stretch drive. Thanks for keeping this thread going despite all the demands of RL.
In any event, best of luck to all contestants.
The deadline is next Sunday, but if I remember correctly from the previous thread, the admin will still let you submit a contest story one or two days after the deadline. Best of luck.
