The Authors' Hangout 2010 Halloween Contest Support Thread

Yep, but it's not just an absence of high votes being cast; the scores are being pulled downward.

But, with the stringency of the voting system definitions here, even a 4 vote pulls a typical contest score downward. The after-the-contest readers could just be more honest in following the guidelines they are given--more story readers than manipulators.

A 4.0 story should be a really, really good one by the category definitions. Unfortunately, only the reader who is also an author (or a habitual contest voter) understands why votes have to be artificially inflated here. And the time of emphasis for that is during contests.

I'm curious: how are you keeping track of your votes, anyway? Or is it all about the math?

I have no plans, nor ambition of doing that, but just wondering.

Emerald Kitten's lament

at the obvious risk of slagging my own score... whatever it is now, scouries logic about multiple stories and spreading thin holds no literary water...

If you post 2 stories, and a reader 'sort of' likes your first, he/she/it may go on to check the second, like it more, & boost your score...

Until it's time to winnow the stories down an authors' works are not competing against one another, at least in a way that hurts them. the only way that would be true is if a reader could only vote for one story or one of a single author's stories.

as to the 'bell curve' that falls apart the moment you begin to add in variables... not all the stories are in fantasy or loving wife or erotic horror... not all readers read all the categories or all of the stories, for that matter.

true, having more fans and fellow writers who appreciate your work or your pithy comments on board or your tag (nice one btw EK) will mean more votes.

the comment i can't argue with is that readers who give up on a story or never read it at all aren't included... except even they are counted in the 'viewed' numbers... A ratio of viewed to voted could be employed to 'shade' equal story values in judging, but that would ignore the simple truth that lots of readers won't wade through a 7 page piece but will finish a 2 page bit (or so i'm told... can't seem to get under 3 pages)

it's been fun hanging on the board here, but again i am amazed how many of us are willing to nitpick and fight when all together we're just a handful of the population willing to A) admit we like erotica B) try our hand at WRITING erotica, & C) brave enough to put it out there for others to eyeball...

imho if one person likes a piece i put up, it was worth putting it up. The haters that want to slag a story in the comments or who blackball a piece by 1 starring it are wasting an amazing amount of time doing something they don't enjoy. THEY'RE the ones I'd save my righteous indignation for.

Oh well... October's almost over... I'll be interested to see if the winner is one I've already read or if it'll be a new read to try.

It's simple math and daily monitoring of the information Lit provides. Lit gives us the vote count and average vote for each story, and those can be used to calculate the sum of all the votes. When a vote is cast, repeating the calculation gives the new sum, and the value of the cast vote is just the diffference between the new and old sums. This works so long as the number of votes isn't too large--because Lit provides only two decimal places of precision; although more can be teased out by guessing at the rounding Lit does.

The new look of the site actually shows you a running tally if you look at yours or any authors submissions page... that's one bit i like about it.

i miss the side bar inclusion of other chapters in a multi part piece. And a couple times i thought a story was over and done with for a moment as far down as you have to scroll to find page 2. left me scratching my head wondering what the authors were thinking leaving huge hanging threads.

Exactly. :)
I try not to fight. It's pointless. It's a freaking message board.
But I have a hard time tolerating people who tear others down.
The world is a cruel place on it's own.. I don't think anyone should have to take crap off of someone on the internet.
So I fixed it, lol. I got it off my chest, got him on ignore, and ya know, it felt so good, I'm gonna throw a few more people on that iggy list. lol.

I'm not yelling at you Alan! I'm really a sweet girl, I swear! lol. :p :cathappy:

I am also excited for it to be the end of the month. I can't wait to see who the winners are!
As I've said before, I'm just proud of myself for not being a scaredy kat and actually posting something in a contest. :)

(And I'm ready for the next one! I have a story that I've been writing on for a while.. it's kind of ironic, it starts around Halloween and ends up at Christmas... kind of fitting for this transition we're having into the winter contest. :))

So screw the voting - I want to write works that readers enjoy and get a chance to meet and interact with the wonderful people, very much including Luna and Ekittie and many others I am now blessed to be able to call friends, that are here.

Gee, this must make me one of the dreaded AHers, Well guess what - considering who else is an AHer there isn't anything I'd rather be!

I agree! A toast! lol. *raises her coffee cup* To the dreaded AHers, may we eat, drink, and be perverted!

:p Thanks lit. :)

Could I ask?

I was just wondering if anyone would be so kind as to take a look at the new and improved (edited) ~Strawberry Delight~, especially if you have read the original. I want to make sure it flows well. I only added a few more paragraphs to it, but I wanted to give it a bit more substance, plot, and heart. It's still a shorty for me, but I am much happier with it, now. Thanks so much! (nearing the end....)

Same here OwlWhisper. Is there a way to delete the multiple posts I know it says "Edit and Delete" but I do not see a way to delete. If anyone knows, please tell me HOW TO DELETE MY MULTIPLE POSTS. Thanks! :)

In the meantime; ellipses are a bit less obtrusive than a whole post, 3 times across.

Nothing wrong with ellipses, dots and periods. I have a whole thread dedicated just to those. LOL Don't search for it. Please. Hmmmm...I guess it is time to start thinking about Christmas. I need a good situation. I just can't think...

Sethp,

*giggles* I LOVE them too. But, I know some people find them obnoxious and annoying. I've started using dashes, to help *hehe* In this case, it's better than having to read my post 3 and 4 times. I think.

Is the Holiday contest JUST holidays, or also a winter theme?

That's kinda like telling someone not to look down when they're really high up and frightened.

"Don't search for it. Please."

Well, Seth, I'm not very good at following directions. :D Of course, it wasn't that difficult to find either.

You had way, way, way too much time on your hands, huh? ;)

I think holidays but I could be wrong. It's fun to find a good holiday situation with a twist. I need that nice little twist to get going.
