The Authors' Hangout 2010 Halloween Contest Support Thread

Ya know...
I don't get a lot of comments.
On anything. Even this contest didnt generate a ton.
All these people have a million comments, and I get like 3 or 4 or 6. Max.
It's not like my stories suck, lol, I have a good number of reads, and decent scores.
I just wonder why that is, lol. again.

Oh well. No big deal I guess. :p

Same here. Most I've ever gotten on a story was 8. But they usually hover around 2 or 3.

Comments

Most I've ever gotten was 4.
Comments are nice, tho, when the commentator shows they really get what you're trying to do. If you're trying to do more than just the average porn story.

QUOTE stepup So...I'm really insulted that I wasn't insulted in the above list of disqualified stories for that "other" contest! LOL WTF?? … A huge thank you to PennLady for excellent editing. It's not easy helping a retard learn to write, but she's slowly getting me there! Happy Halloween!

Oh don’t worry mr step up, you’re story will certainly be disqualified. And for multiple transgressions – ugly AV, category selection, writing imperfections, etc. But the jury didn’t even have to get that far.

I mean who is going to read a story by someone who introduces his story by saying it’s from the pen of a self professed retard?

C’mon!

LOL Now I'm happy!

Okay, so now I'm getting a little irritated, lol.
'Crafting' was the best of the three I submitted.
It started out over 4.6 for a minute, then dropped, and held steady at 4.56.
Yesterday it was at 4.53.. and now this morning, its at 4.50. wtf?

:rolleyes::mad::eek::devil::catgrin:

*sigh* Maybe a sweep will help?

P.S. Totally unrelated, but my highest rated story went from 4.82 to 4.78. :(

My score just went down again, but I also saw that I have 6969 views.

That must be worth something, right? Like, for a minute? Until someone else views it?

No?

Meh.

Is there anywhere else that will give you 6969 views of your story? That's more than the sales of several classic authors' individual works. Even if only one tenth of them actually read your story, you would have to work hard to get nearly 700 people to read a story as a hard copy.

What The Fuck?

Sometimes when I read posts like the one above I just can’t stop myself from shaking my head in despair. Do you understand the difference between 4.53 and 4.50 when we’re dealing with such a small number of votes? Did you study any math when you were growing up?

The difference my dear is that someone gave you a 3! In other words someone “Liked your story”. That’s what 3 means! And poor little Emerald Girl is getting a “little irritated, lol” because someone liked her story but didn’t “Love it – one of the best”. That, by the way, is what 5 means.

Quite frankly your stories (like most on LITEROTICA) are rated far too high. There are over 130 stories entered in the LITEROTICA section of the contest (when you include andtheends 25 stories).

One would expect under normal circumstances some sort of bell curve if we plotted all the scores. Maybe 10% between 1 and 2 and 10% between 4 and 5. Maybe 20% between 2 and 3 or 4 and 5. With the balance (40%) between 3 and 4.

You should thank your lucky stars you’ve got one story at 4.50. Just think what it would be if they removed the votes you and your friends made for it. Or if the thousands of readers who clicked away from it before they got to the end had voted.

You’ve written three average stories – nothing that truly stands out when compared to the other 130 stories. But certainly nothing to be ashamed of either. Good work - be happy. And maybe in the next contest, mind you this is just a suggestion, you might be wiser just to enter one story. Instead of spreading yourself so thin...

But we definitely don’t need any more whining from you about your scores. You should be silently celebrating your good fortune.

Truer words were never written mr ogg. And, on top of that, unless your story was disqualified, you have a chance to win an A.I.R. Award.

How much better than that can life get?

I wasn't complaining about the number of reads. I thought it was cool that I got a double-sixty-nine. Like seeing the odometer turn over 100,000.

Keep writing and you'll see those sort of figures on your stories.

One of mine is on 280,474 but that's not surprising for the Incest category. The cleverest thing about the story is the title: Virgin's Sister. Those two words are frequently searched for. :)

I got quite a few on a couple contest stories back when I was writing a lot one year. I think how often you post stories makes a lot of difference because people get familiar with your name. I also made sure I quickly answered any email feedback I got that had an email attached, with at least an "I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks!" I don't have a following anymore and not much time to write or answer feedback so I'm happy with whatever I get on this contest. (Though of course I'd prefer to place in the top three, lol. )

I'm working on reading and commenting but there are so many entries that I know I won't get to them all. Pm me if you really need another vote to qualify or something. Good luck everyone! :rose:

Sorry for those of you who have him on ignore, but I can't take one more second.

The point I was making was that I thought it was crazy that it went down so much all of a sudden. I'm sorry if you missed the point. About the math.. yeah, I studied it, but I just wasn't interested. :p

The difference my dear is that someone gave you a 3! In other words someone “Liked your story”. That’s what 3 means! And poor little Emerald Girl is getting a “little irritated, lol” because someone liked her story but didn’t “Love it – one of the best”. That, by the way, is what 5 means.
Again, the 'getting a little irritated' was that it happened all of a sudden, right beofore the end. Is that all right with you? People could give me 1's, and that would be fine. Not everyone is going to  my stories. :)

Quite frankly your stories (like most on LITEROTICA) are rated far too high. There are over 130 stories entered in the LITEROTICA section of the contest (when you include andtheends 25 stories).
Oh, I'm sure you're right, because you're an expert. :) But a lot of people write their asses off to earn their scores. And you spitting off your blather is only to make yourself feel better, I'm sure.

One would expect under normal circumstances some sort of bell curve if we plotted all the scores. Maybe 10% between 1 and 2 and 10% between 4 and 5. Maybe 20% between 2 and 3 or 4 and 5. With the balance (40%) between 3 and 4.
Whew, math again. I just skipped this paragraph. ;)

You're right- I should thank my lucky stars. But you're incorrect if you think I have friends that voted a million times for me. If they did, I would let them know they weren't allowed to give me anything less than a 5. Then you'd really have something to bitch about. :D Pst, by the way- I don't have any friends, and I didn't vote for myself.

You’ve written three average stories – nothing that truly stands out when compared to the other 130 stories. But certainly nothing to be ashamed of either. Good work - be happy. You know, I got a little scared when you almost gave me a side-ways, back-handed compliment. But of course, you ruined it. Ya know, you oughta try being a little kinder to everyone. I've watched you pretty much be, well, kind of an assface to quite a few people on here. Just some food for thought: A dog has more friends because he wags his tail, not his tongue. :)

But we definitely don’t need any more whining from you about your scores. You should be silently celebrating your good fortune.
You're right. I guess I didn't take others into consideration. Thank you very much for pointing that out to me.. I guess in my own back-handed way I was being boastful. At this point I'm mostly disappointed in myself. I let you push me an inch too far, you kind of pissed me off, which I know you enjoy, and I've wasted a handful of minutes of my day. What a waste. *Shakes head sadly*
Please dont worry about commenting back if you were going to. You'll now be on ignore. I'd prefer to miss out on the negativity and the useless ramblings. :) Have a wonderful night! :cathappy:

Christ!!!!!!

Sweetie the point is that it didn’t go down so much!!!!!! Going from 4.53 to 4.50 is not a significant change. It’s minor. One vote, a 3, was all it would have taken.

One vote happened all of a sudden, right before the end? The voting still has days to go…

And to insinuate that I suggested that you have friends that voted a million times for you is typical arguing AHland style. Honey, the story only has 50 votes! I’d guess only 20 to 25 of them came from you, your family, your friends and OggThread AHers.

What is it with you kitten people?

I'm with you. I'm usually in the 5-10 area for a story that does well. Then again, some do better than others.

I have a story with over 100K reads, a 4.70 with 0 comments after 9 years. Ouch. No love there. I have several other 0 comment stories, with the 'H' next to them.

On the other hand, my two most commented on are also my most popular by far. 600K reads and 400K reads with 59 comments each.

Last year's entry in the Halloween contest, with around 20K reads is one of my least read, and has 20 comments. The first five chapters of A Blackmail Tale has a combined 1M reads, and only one story with more than 10 comments (14).

I'm guessing it's a combination of the category, how controversial your subject is, and how much you interact with the commenters. I've noticed that in many of the stories with lots of comments, a good percentage of those are from the author themselves. Just get yourself a couple of dedicated trolls, and you'll get the comments going.

EmeraldKitten,

I bet that vent session felt good on some level. BooHISS to negativity. *hugs* I had a major vent session this past weekend. It was long overdue. Full moon was the perfect catalyst for it! It felt good though. And you know what? The next day, I woke up and my sciatica pain was nearly gone! It had all been building right there, at the seat of my emotions (sacral chakra). Thankfully those caught in the cross-fire understood where it came from, so were not too shocked or dismayed. Releasing is cleansing.

The scoring is kinda wacky. I'm telling you the computer gremlins have something to do with it. I didn't vote for myself either, probably would be swept away even if we did, you know?

Looking forward to reading your newest story, when I have the concentration for it.

*shakes head at the poobah*

The point on ratings that only one 3 will affect a 4.5 score based on no more than 50 by dragging the score down by a couple of percentage points is correct--as is the observation that the Web site's voting criteria makes a 3 a favorable vote.

It's weird how it all happens.. How does the perverted mind work. ;)
You're probably very right... of course, I could always do as favoritesgoddess suggested and head to the Loving Wives section... Nahh. :) I dont want comments that badly! :) Scary! :)

Thanks Luna. :) *hugs* I hate to fight back and join the playground games, but grr! :) He is safely on ignore now, and I don't have to be inconvenienced again.
Sorry about your vent session... but it does feel good to get it out! :)
I agree about the scoring. I really don't care.. I don't expect to win anyway, lol. Hmmm. the computer gremlins must be neighbors of the dryer gnomes that steal socks!
I asked about people voting for themselves earlier in the thread, lol. I was just curious. I used to vote for myself- hey, whats one more vote? But then I felt dishonest, even if it probably did get swept away.
Thanks a ton Luna. Glad ya understood! lol. :)

I find it funny that it is true the voting ins and outs are fairly shrouded in mystery but that is for the very good reason of those who clearly care more for their own success and work than other people. If Lit posted all the details about voting then the malcontents would find ways to exploit it.

Understanding that, you know I would love to win a contest and I love my red H's; but far more important to me is the opportunity to interact with fellow writers here. This part is priceless!

So screw the voting - I want to write works that readers enjoy and get a chance to meet and interact with the wonderful people, very much including Luna and Ekittie and many others I am now blessed to be able to call friends, that are here.

Gee, this must make me one of the dreaded AHers, Well guess what - considering who else is an AHer there isn't anything I'd rather be!

Lit,

Too true! It's really great to make the connections with readers, but especially with fellow writers.

EmeraldKitten:

Don't forget the pen-stealing faeries too ;)

In the six months since the contest closed the all-entry average has fallen from a post-sweep high of 4.22 to the current 4.15. About half of the decrease came in the week after the contest ended. So be prepared to take some hits right after the contest ends. There don't appear to be any big sweeps to clean out the post-contest trolls.

That's bias too, isn't it? It's just as likely that, although the stories continue to be read, there's no big effort to inflate ratings after the contest is over, isn't it? ;)
