Taking the Piss

Sure - but 'taking the piss' isn't really an Australianism I thought - more a Pommy expression.

[Glad i found this thread - Melbourne here! Don't get in here too frequently as 'i am flat out like a lizard drinking'! Normally travelling in the US or Europe - dealing with people who don't understand me.]

Masseur - if you think that is an English phrase, then you are either taking the piss out of me, or having a lend of me, or pulling the other one!

And in terms of a lot of the earlier comments - love them.

Not liking cricket

Going back to an old comment here!

DOESN'T LIKE CRICKET? WTF?! Not even the 20/20?

At least he lets you watch it, that's very considerate of him :)

I even have an American colleague, born and bred in Seattle, who loves cricket. Flew himself to Mumbai, just to watch a test [all 5 days] and then went to the world cup in the Caribbean.

Bruce

Have no problems with the name of the hairy nosed wombat - but was he selected as the mascot because:

a) it was the only pic you had of something other than a kangaroo, koala oran emu?
b) it was a cute pic
c) it was representative of your view of men in general ie. eats roots and leaves!

[as an aside on the name, i thought the classic couple was always Shazza & Kev!]

Banjo (AB) Paterson

Whenever you look for great Aussie slang I always think the best resources are books like 'Let's Talk Strine' and the works of Barry Humphries a.k.a. Bazza McKenzie or Les Patterson. How can you not love our take on English when an Aussie uses a phrase like "shaking hands with the wife's best friend" or "as full as a Pommy complaint box" lol

The poem from which my name was taken [actually annointed on me by an American female police officer who loved all Australian poetry] and others by AB Paterson are also a great source of 'colloquialisms'.

.

I dunno - I recall hearing it on English cop shows, along with 'wotcher' and 'rozzers' and other pommy expressions

perhaps but most australian slang had its begining from cockney slang that was adapted over time to what it is now ..classic example is the rhyming slang..trouble and strife,(wife) etc are all originally cockney slang which the convicts brought with them.

I'm sure we share lots of slang, and some of the expletives are pretty universal too aren't they!

... and I'm pissed off I'm not on the same continent as you Sassy, love your voluptuous dimensions! So much to enjoy and so so very far away!

Sure - but for the benefit of SatinDesire, who first asked "Will some lovely nice Aussie teach me some common Australian slang? I'm fascinated with Linguistics and know a lot of British slang, but sadly, no Aussie." I was trying to stay away from the imported rhyming slang and concentrate on the home grown variety - chucking a sickie, chucking a uie (actually thats a hard one to write down - how to you spell 'youie' as in 'making a U-turn'??? lol) and shrimps on the barbie, which was Americanised from the Australian 'prawns on the barbie'.

(I am blessed being in the same continent, but sadly the wrong city - will be in melbourne on Friday Sassy hun - will be looking out for you ;-) )

Tomorrow our Nation will pause to remember our soldiers.. those who have fallen in battle.. those who returned home, forever changed... and those who still fight for our country today...

If you want peace, prepare for war...

Our freedom has a price.

Lest We Forget.

THe dawn service at teh Shring is so emotional the last post and the ODE gets me every time

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

THe great thing is my 11 year old was talking to me all night about ANZAC day and what the men and women did so we could live in freedom her words.
At least they get taught somethign important at school.

Coffee in melbourne

Ah, Sassy - thats what i get for not checking in a while. Here I am back in Melbourne for the night, with a big empty luxury hotel room, and looking for good coffee - I'll try to provide a bit more warning next time, I'd appreciate your guidance to a good coffee place I could call a 'regular'.

(and *bump* lol)

not degraves today - but many others!

Depends on where you are in melbourne! Somewhere inside is good. (So Not Degraves st between flinders and Flinders lane - keep that for a warmer day).

il Solito Posto - down lane off Collins st opposite 120 Collins if up that end!

There are many.
