the "ask crazychemgirl a question" thread

If you've answered this one before, sorry.

What's the best Canadian brewed beer?

typically a bleach is an oxidizing agent... most contain chlorine, but the ones that don't are usually peroxides. Some bleaches are reducing agents though.

do you want me to go into the chemistry of oxidizing and reducing?

Eh..... Yes, but only if you can make it simple enough for me to understand, which might mean making it too simple to be accurate. But give it a shot! Analogies help. I'm a visual learner. :rose:

so an oxidizing bleach works by breaking the chemical bonds of colour compounds (such as beta carotene)... this changes the molecule into something that doesn't absorb visible light.

a reducing bleach changes the chemical bonds from double to single bonds, which again reduces the compounds ability to absorb visible light.

does that help?

Did you ever catch any episodes of Breaking Bad? And if you did...

A) Were you heckling whatever inaccuracies you caught?

B) Start pondering the viability of becoming the Meth Empress Of Canuckistan?

I really only watched the first few episodes of the first season.. I did enjoy it.. but didn't have time to catch up... so then I just figured I'd wait til the whole thing was over and watch it in a marathon weekend.

My rather large left testicle hangs about a half an inch lower than the right and tends to garner all the attention during manipulations. Suggestions for equal distribution?

TIA,
JAJ:cool:

well then.. uhm... let them get hairy because the difference won't be as noticeable once they are covered in hair.

What are you doing this weekend? I have the keys to a friend's winterized cabin and would be up for a Breaking Bad marathon with a couple cases of Alpine. :D

I came up a flash this past weekend.

I was camping at Huntington Beach state park, down below Myrtle Beach. Had a great spot but noticed right away the snow birds had the best spots. I strolled up to the registration station and asked the lady there about getting a spot for a week in the summer. 200 bucks for a week beats a 6 to 9000 dollar house on the beach.

She said there were probably no spots left cause they had already been booked, up to 11 months in advance! But, lo and behold, she did find me one.

Now, this is where the brain flash came in. I'm thinking I should buy up 30 to 50 spots when the 11 month window opens, then, advertise for them on craigslist in NY, PA, NJ, etc for 3 times the cost. They will gladly pay.

Can't miss.

You should do it, assuming that the park has no regs against buying in bulk and re-selling.

I can't find any, seriously.

But, I don't won't the Bieber to be my bitch in prison either.

You should saunter back up to the registration lady and turn on the charm and ask if there's a maximum number of spots one person can reserve. Your backup story is that you have a really big family that likes to vacation together.

Think Duck Dynasty, but with fewer guns and more campers.

Note that I managed to use "saunter", "charm" and "Duck Dynasty" in one post about nefarious business dealings in the South.

There ought to be some kind of medal for that kind of twisted logic, no?

I have a new business venture in mind. Should I pursue it?

Yes, yes you should.

I'd double check.. You could get in serious trouble.

Exactly.

Ewww, lol

Hahahahaha

What are your feelings on Pookie?

Who is Pookie?

Meh, I'm not impressed.

We like to stroll here in the Low Country.

The "charm" is assumed.

And, we say "fuck a duck" more times than we should.

I say that too!

Why are you a perminent student....will you ever finish?

Lots of starts and stops.... Cuz I kept moving and shit kept happening in my life. I should be finishing my undergrad next year.. And then teaching school a year later.

Honestly? No.

At least not much. You say the oxidizing bleach results in a compound that absorbs visible light, but the reducing bleach results in a compound with reduced ability to absorb visible light. Shouldn't both be reducing the ability to absorb light, thus reflecting all wavelengths and looking all sparkly white?

And why does breaking bonds (entirely for oxidizing bleach, reducing from double to singe for reducing bleach, if I understand you) affect light absorption and reflection?

You're a dear for even trying to educate me. :rose:

haha... that was supposed to say "a compound that doesn't absorb visible light.

well breaking bonds means that the compound is no longer the same compound, and therefore doesn't absorb visible light in the same way as the original compound.
