the "ask crazychemgirl a question" thread

what about them.. they are in the leaves all the time, you just don't see them until the bright green fades away.

I figure you'd have explained that the anthocyanin was responsible for the reds and the carotenoids are responsible for the yellows.

oh, I didn't want to get too technical... lol

I read an interesting student study on those colours and how synthetic colours from m&m's were much easier to isolate than the natural colours in things such as beets and carrots. I thought that was interesting.

I picked up purple carrots at the farmer's market on Saturday. Great tasting.

really? I have a thing about eating foods that aren't the colour I would expect them to be.. ala purple carrots and yellow (or green) tomatoes.

We grew some orange cherry-size tomatoes this year that were very sweet and tasty.

Please be as technical as you like.

I have a liquid amber tree which I planted a few years back. This year its leaves are a very dark red, whereas some years they are very bright. I'm guessing this is due to the vagaries of the ambient temperature.

None of the other trees are showing any signs of colour change yet.

I like to have a variety of coloured salad tomatoes, unfortunately the non-red varieties tend to be more expensive here. Not sure I would be keen to have purple carrots. I'm not even that fond of red onions.

Interesting.. I'm just learning about biology cuz I've never taken any before. I find it fascinating.

I just don't like onions, period.

Why do cocks (roosters, that is lol) crow at daybreak?

Crowing is a warning signal advertising territorial claims... the highest ranked rooster has priority in breaking the dawn, and lower roosters are patient enough to wait and follow the highest ranked rooster each morning

Is this a good rating? (Cuz it's all red, which is normally associated with bad)

I always put food color in my mashed potatoes. The green ones are my favorite.

Interesting that you associate a preferential taste to one particular artificial dye over another.

That was obviously too easy. lol

I have been trying to produce an algebraic representation of the perfect woman. My algebra is a little rusty and this is as far as I have got.

What equations might help to complete the picture?

you could try a couple of these.. of course you'd have to set your axis coming out of the page.

What is your ideal activity for this afternoon?

Ideal meaning when I don't have errands, chores and homework? What's that like? ;)

JK.. Probably an ideal Sunday afternoon would start with a mid-morning brunch followed by a walk around a park to relax, take some pictures and commune with nature. Then probably curling on the couch with a blanket and a good movie, good shows or some BO2.. Basically anything to kind of relax and center myself for the start of a new week.

Now that is just brilliant. I may have to go 3-D. :D

3D would probably be optimal.

In the last few days I have seen quite a few spiders around the house. Is this just a coincidence or is there some kind of seasonal thing going on?

In the fall, spiders who have been hiding out in the cool crevices of your house during the hot summer come out to find a mate or possibly more food.
