The AH Writing Tip Series. Episode One: What to do with Dad?

I tried a writing tip thread some time ago, and it started off great, then...devolved. But I think its a good idea to share things you've learned that can be passed to other authors, new and experienced. This time rather than a quick tip, each thread can be a specific top, so next person who wants to contribute you're episode two, and so on, so forth.

I expect and encourage discussion in each one and other authors are free to add to the topic, but let's avoid out right disagreements and back and forth bickering. These are well meaning tips gained through experience, not judgments or attacks on anyone who does it different. Also, this is simply based on what seems to work-or doesn't. This is not about scores, H's and stat obsession, yes, some things will help a story excel in those areas, but this is more about writing the story you want.

Mother Son stories are probably the single biggest draw on this site. I/T itself is the top category for attention, and M/S rules within it.

But where there's a mom and son, well what about Dad? Where the hell did he go? Where is he when all this taboo action is going on?

Here's some suggestions, and understand that each one varies on what you want the story to be. They can also affect how the story is perceived as every category has its likes and dislikes so whatever you choose, base it on what you want for response.

So, where is dad? I'm going to exclude a full family set up because if that's the case then there is most likely a sister involved as well so it's a different dynamic.

But if you're story is Mom-son what's the set up?

1-Dad has passed away. This is the angle I have found works best if you're going for a slow build and with an emotional need over just Mom's hot why not. Dad was a good man, got sick, was in an accident, heart attack. I won't say the reason doesn't matter because it could be an element in your idea. But how this works is he's out of the picture and in the way that leaves Mom heartbroken and her son-also dealing with loss-feeling the need to support his mother in every way he can.

This is the "Man of the House" Trope. He's working, he's helping with the bills, he's doing things around the house, maybe still in school as well. He is focused on Mom being okay. Has little social life, no girlfriend because he has no time. Mom is gun shy on dating someone else, would feel she's betraying the memory of the husband, or just in this day and age, dating is damn scary and a shallow pool for everyone. They spend a lot of time together little date nights of take out and movies, he's becoming a placebo partner in every place but the bedroom, and at some point-pick your trigger event-the line is crossed and that happens.

2-Dad left-and is a D-bag. Similar set up with man of the house, but dad cheated on Mom so she boots him, or he confessed to an affair and he's ditching his wife for another woman-make her a sugar baby and it adds some bitterness on the mother's POV- But in this one there is still some heartbreak but in the form of betrayal. Mom isn't just sad, she's fucking pissed hell hath no fury mode. But she still has those feelings it was her, her low self-esteem taking a hit. Son is pissed at Dad and vows he will make sure his mom ends up with someone who she can trust to never hurt her. Maybe that someone is him? Mom son couple ceated, with some revenge fucking as some spice.

3-Dad is there and an asshole. Cheating as in example Two, but mom knows but is staying together for family reasons, financial reasons to keep the son in college and the home, neither of which she could foot herself after a divorce. Son knows mom is hurt, knows why and can't understand why she deals with it. He feels sorry for her, thinks how can anyone do this to such an amazing woman, she can do better. Easy set up for a scene where mom breaks down and is upset, lonely within her marriage and son comforts her, and comfort leads to...

Now, warning on this one as far as how its received goes, The I/T base is a bit laid back for the most part, and you'll get some support that dad deserves this for being a prick and good for the son treating mom the way she should be. Keep in mind these are taboo fantasies and this is the content they enjoy. But the anti-cheat crowd does not just live in LW they seem to have a 'infidelity radar' and you will get some mom's a whore dad should shoot her and the son comments.

4-Dad is there and likes watching. This is something I've done a couple of stories on. Mom is a hot wife-or was in the past. Son finds some videos, or even catches her with another man and thinking he has to tell dad about this, but holy shit, dad is there! WTF? We then get a-fill in your story-explanation of why they enjoy this lifestyle and son becomes oddly obsessed with seeing his mother this way, starts seeing her different, really staring, maybe looking for and watching more vids, dad and mom find out and...

Cue porn absurdity kicking in and Dad's happily watching his wife with his son. He can join in, or just like to watch. Same disclaimer, you will get some heat from weirdo moralists. Takes all kinds.

5-Dad is a tool, and mom and son are going around behind his back, but in these stories its tossing in the 'risk factor" mom's giving hand jobs under the table, they're screwing on the couch while he's in the yard, Mom slipping into the shower with the son while he's sleeping. You can go all in and have something going on in the room while he's sleeping. These are the "Dad humiliation, if he only knew' version which is more lusty and dirty and making a fool of the father rather than a secret romance behind his back.

These can be a lot of fun to write, but again you will get some ire from the man babies who take fictional work too seriously.

In closing 1-2 will usually get good overall response. 3 is still mostly positive because dad's a dick and has it coming. 4 can be fine, but there are 'purists' who just want it to be mom and son. Then there's anti hotwife/ willing cuck crowd. 5 is most likely the write at your own risk crowd, but never let that stop you.

I've written 10 mom-son stories, if you count two of my series (one 3 chapters, another 8) as one story each, so this is a topic I have wrestled with in each one of them.

I think you cover the terrain pretty well. In most of my mom-son stories, Dad is out of the picture, either because he died or got divorced from Mom.

In my most popular mom-son story, however, Late Night on the Loveseat With Mom, Dad is very much still in the picture. But he's rude and inattentive to Mom, and he's prone to getting drunk too often. In that story, Mom and Son have sex while Dad literally is in the same room in a chair in front of them watching TV and drinking beer.

For some reason, this theme seems to get by the "cheating wife" censorship crowd. I think there's an innate power to the idea that the Son can step in if Dad isn't doing his job. I've tried this a few times, and it's always worked. Maybe it's an Oedipal thing.

I don't pretend it's realistic, but the Mom-Son incest subcategory is one where I don't find realism necessary. I see the stories as fun romps, and most readers seem to look at them that way, too. All I need is the barest sliver of justification or plausibility, and it seems to work out OK.

So far I have NOT written a story where Son and Mom get it on and Dad knows and approves. That's much, much trickier. I don't personally find humiliation/cuckold stories that appealing so I'm not likely to write it that way. I am working on a story of this kind, where a family of four goes to Hawaii and over the span of the seven day vacation everybody sleeps with everybody (though no Dad-Son activity), but I"m still slowly working on how to pull it off. There will be some surprise, but no humiliation.

I think the key is to sell the reader on the Mom-Son attraction. Readers of this category are oddly romantic. They want lots of loving feelings between the participants. If as an author you can convey that then you'll keep most readers interested and approving despite the problem of Dad.

Oddly romantic is a good way to put it. I mentioned mother son romance to my wife once-and she is open minded enough that we are always discussing my writing and kinks in general-and she gives me this look, and says, "Of course it is."

For the Dad being a creep, that's basic writing. You make someone unlikable; the reader doesn't question what's done to him or behind his back.

This can dip into any of the options LC highlighted above, but it gives things a slightly different spin. Like, maybe Dad doesn't care how Mom's getting her rocks off, except he'd be really pissed if he knew it was his son, or maybe he wouldn't care at all, but they don't want to take the chance.

Ignorance is bliss or 'you do whatever, just don't let me hear about it' angle.

I used it once in a short for an anthology with some other authors where the family was wealthy, and dad didn't care who took care of his wife as long as she wasn't pestering him while he gave sugar babies rides on his yacht.

I also did one where dad was dying, and wanted to basically pass mom on to his son (I know, right?") but in that case he knew.

If he hadn't there could be a lot of potential to play with guilt and conflict. Maybe I'll give it a go.

Good idea knocking off the boyfriend. IT crowd is odd, some are fine with dad being around but a boyfriend is an outsider and puts them off.

I gave up wondering about all this a long time ago and just roll with it.

If you think about the fact that it's mostly (although definitely not exclusively) men reading the story, it's flattering to their fantasy egos to think they can please Mom where the failure Dad couldn't. Dad is the villain, Son is the hero, and Mom is the princess rescued from her plight. It's all very basic stuff.

I wrote a "What I Wrote And Why" where I laid out how I found mother-son stories ridiculous. They are the least probable of the different inter-family types of incest. There are very few real-world examples of older woman-younger man long-term relationships.

Yeah, this is ridiculous nonsense. In these kind of stories, there is a role change - the son becomes the adult and the mom becomes the child. He's the one taking care of her. In bed, he's the knowledgeable, confident one whereas she reacts to his sexual advances like she's never had sex before, even though she has far more sexual experience than he does. He's the "Man of the House" even though she earns far more than he does. Bu readers love it.

In these kind of stories, I don't see the "Mom is fucking pissed" angle played up. I/T is to me a very romantic category and the readers want to see the mom and son get together because of True Love, not because Mom wants to have a revenge fuck. What I'd like to see in these kind of stories is that Mom and Son have a normal relationship until Dad starts fucking around, and Dad exiting Stage Right is what triggers the change in feelings between Mom and Son.

These stories also have the role change where the son becomes the adult and the mom becomes the child. The mom often looks to the son for reassurance that she's still attractive and a good person.

I have two mother-son stories, and one uses this approach. I've never gotten any comments complaining about the infidelity. Maybe I did a got job of making the dad a cheating asshole.

To me, this is a premise that is more likely to bring out the "Mom wants a revenge fuck" angle. Dad is "working late" with his young, big-titted secretary? The son easily convinces mom to get revenge by bending her over the couch.

Not something I personally like. To me, the power of I/T is the MMC and the FMC know what they want is wrong, but they are so attracted to each other that they can resist succumbing to their desires. In this kind of story, one day Dad tells the son, "Go fuck Mom. She's a good lay." There's no emotional heft to these kind of stories that most I/T stories have.

Hmmm... I don't really see a lot of this premise. The only story that comes to mind is Omelettes for Breakfast. Risky mom-son sex can fit into a lot of story ideas, but I don't see it as the driving element of a story.

Someone already mentioned a #6, so I'll add some other premises starting with #7.

Dad is a functional alcoholic who is frequently drunk at home or he's a good provider who works far too much. Regardless, he's not fulfilling Mom's needs and the son decides to step up and fulfill them. Mom feels a lot of guilt about letting her son make his advances on her, but she needs more affection than what her husband is providing.

8 - Mom and Son take a vacation
Mom's marriage is happy but lacking in the bedroom. Mom and Son take a vacation, and Son provides the hot sex Mom has been missing. An option is that Dad is also on the vacation, but he's not around a lot of the time. He could be exhausted from the drive and goes to bed early, or he spends the morning golfing while Mom and Son fuck like bunnies back in the room.

For my story 'Tonya, Tiffany & the Twins' I had the grouchy, long-suffering father Henry go on a business trip from San Diego to New York, leaving his twin sons Cam and Chris - two dim-witted slacker surfer dudes - with their bimbo stepmother Tonya and her daughter Tiffany, who is even less bright than her mother and stepbrothers. Henry however doesn't vanish from the story from this point, his trip to New York starts with the flight from hell in which he gets showered by vomit when the girl in the seat behind him gets sick, in NYC he gets into disputes with several taxi drivers, a pimp and a clown; and finally gets butted into a stagnant lake by an angry ram, causing him to have a heart attack and needing to have his stomach pumped out. Things only go from bad to worse in the hospital, where Henry's injury to his backside is shown to medical students by two doctors, who want the trainees to see an unusual injury for themselves, and at the end Henry has another heart attack when a series of unfortunate events lead to him seeing nude pictures of his estranged first wife (the mother of his two sons) in a pornographic magazine.

While a business trip might be a good way to get Dad out of the way and no doubt this has been used in plenty of stories, I don't think there are too many stories where the father has his own tale of misadventure while away.

The best M/S piece I’ve read on this site was this scenario. It was actually son-in-law, but dad was unable to perform (older, out of shape, workaholic). He didn’t know and didn’t want to know, but wasn’t stupid either.
