The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

57 this morning 85 for a high. The last day of sunshine as the clouds move in for a weeks stay or so they say.

Fresh coffee all around.

Some friends from here left Saturday for a point south of Ft Myers with a large front-end loader and a track hoe. They also have a self contained, solar powered trailer headed that way to live in. This is what those guys do. They basically retire between storms.

Finished my second mug of coffee, so it's now time to think about possibly attempting to do something productive today.

I was planning to call our friends to say "We're coming there to help! How long are the lines at the gas pumps? And could you clear a space for us to park the RV?"

"Still, the best laid plans of mice."
"And men."
"What have men got to do with it?"

This was in the San Juan Islands in Washington state. Orcas island to be specific.

Oh, cool! I love the San Juans.

My nephew and friends just spent a week kayaking around there a few weeks ago. they planned to spend longer, but their trip was cut short by weather.

I assume you've read Snow Falling On Cedars, an excellent novel set in that area?

Eh. San Juan and Washington State is a bit counter-intuitive I suppose. Orcas Island on the other hand seems appropriate (I went Orca sightseeing in that area).

We went on an orcas sightseeing trip. Saw tons of humpbacks, some very close up, and several breaches. But no orcas.

...
It's almost time this morning to make a few phone calls to Ft Myers, Florida friends asking if we are still welcome to visit in another week or two.

2 years ago, friends of ours left here (mid-Atlantic) to live on Sanibel Island.

I just heard from them. Ian destroyed their home was completely!

They've already decided to move back up to the Mid-Atlantic. They have almost nothing left to pack so they rented a car, rented a house online, and are driving up here next weekend, and they don't plan to go back - ever.

A group of us are collecting basic household goods for them, so they'll be able to settle in as quickly as possible.

The lunch time coffee is ready.

Brunch was pancakes. No lunch required.

Writing is slow to non-existent today.

Sorry to hear that about your friends.

At least one of ours said her house is intact. They just had some downed limbs and a few shingles missing. I just called the RV site at the edge of that county about our site reservation, and they just got power back, so our site is ready. But we'll pack plenty of food, water, and fill gas cans before venturing there. Don't want to be a burden on the local supply chain, even a week from now.

You don't call it the Middle East?

I monitored the SARNet during the storm, it sounded horrific. There's talk that Sanibel will be uninhabitable for years to come, I'm so glad they got away safely!

Well, spring is here. The grass is growing like crazy and my eyes are itchy from the pollen.

A large mug of coffee, thanks.

The husband of my wife's oldest friend died this morning. He had been ill for some time but it was still a shock.

They are both younger than us, and the wife has been friends with my wife since they joined playschool seventy+ years ago.

Unfortunately, most of their children were helping a grandson start at university one hundred and fifty miles away this week so they couldn't be there. They knew he had been admitted to the hospital as he had been several times in recent years but they didn't expect him to die this time.

Rusty, I'll make the evening coffee early, just for you and as many of your closest friends as the cafe can hold.

Condolences Ogg.

I am sorry to hear of this. My condolences to your wife, and to all those whose lives he had touched.

Thank you. He was a great bloke and a good friend. He was very active with the local Amateur operatic society as their sound engineer for decades while his wife and daughters performed on stage.

My wife and I will miss him.

His death makes us feel incredibly old.

That's about 5,000 miles from here
It's an oblique reference to something that is already rather obscure, but which is forever lodged in my mind.
It refers to something you can hear on the radio in the video game "Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines"
"Those damn Virginians."
Still makes me smile.

It's too late for me to be drinking coffee, but I'll take in the aroma as I lay in bed reading
