The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

KK - Closest is 70 miles away. When we lived closer to one, it was always fun when they were running the machine and would hand out free samples hot off the conveyor to anyone waiting in line.

DD - Closer, only 30 miles. Cream-filled always my preference. Powdered sugar on top? Very, very messy. Don't dare eat 'em in the car.

Casey's - Quality is regional due to contracted suppliers. We have three in our town, and I haven't been happy with any of them. The one near our (former) cabin was great.

Tim Horton's packed up and left most of the US 10-15 years ago. We used to have one about an hour away. There are a bunch in western Ohio, three in Houston, and a handful of single stores scattered in the eastern US.

Local? We had a great one that lasted about two years. Did a land-office business they couldn't handle. Our choices here are either Casey's, or the bakery at the large-chain supermarket. Now theirs aren't bad, and cooked on-site.

But it doesn't matter any more. Just diagnosed with Type 2, and the doctor frowns on this kind of activity.

I'm sorry to hear about the recent diagnosis. If you're into baking, might I recommend checking out some of the recipes using the Weight Watchers 2 ingredient dough as a substitute. Because it uses high protein greek yogurt, you're combining that protein with the more complex carb but can still have a bit of a sweet treat without spiking blood sugar (of course, talk to your doctor, right? But it worked the two times I had gestational diabetes for getting my treat fix).

Get your levels stabilized and figure out how much you can cheat and where you want to use that budget. It might be a donut a week. Or a milkshake a month. Or whatever.

I hope you can find a way to keep up some of the things that are important to you.

Thanks to you both. I tripped the clinical thresholds in August with an A1C of 6.7 and average glucose at 115, so at this point we're waiting to see what happens with diet changes alone on the next survey in November. The doc who ordered the tests (cardiologist) didn't seem too concerned, but my GP was, and we agreed on trying diet first before starting oral meds. She didn't think insulin was in the immediate future, again seeing what diet does.

I was a bad boy in the two months before the blood tests and was hitting a couple of sugary "comfort" indulgences pretty hard. I've cut those out, completely eliminated potatoes, and cut way back on breads and other high-carb (former) mainstays. On the plus side, as mentioned upstream in this thread, I've incorporated high-protein/low-glycemic rice (both brown and white) as a meal base. Maybe all that's enough to tame things.

I'm realistic about it, though, recognizing indications of pancreas issues and overall insulin resistance that comes with age. There's family history; Dad developed Type 2 at this age, and his brother was Type 1 and died young.

We'll see.

Still hitting too high highs. Should not be 85 this time of year. But they only top out there for a couple of hours, then the night falls pretty quick into the 60s and 50s. Much better than July where it gets hot by 10AM and stays hot until 10PM, then never really cools much before the repeat.

Tims is planning on returning to Florida. At least they were. Not sure whether the decline in snowbirds will affect that.

*Erects a banner on FL/GA Line that says "Welcome To Florida Timmy!*

Can't wait for an actual extra large double-double so I can roll up the brim in the contest. If they come to Florida, they'll probably open one or two sites in Orlando. That's how it's done down here. Everything opens in Orlando, the rest of the state gets McDonalds. There's even a Wegman's grocery store in Orlando. The rest of us gets Aldi's

It's going to be another beautiful sunny day. I just wish I could take advantage of it but I threw out my back yesterday and I'm hobbled today.

There's a fresh pot of coffee going and the teapot is hot. There are pastries and cornbread on the counter. Cream chese and milk are in the 'fridge if you want to amend your cornbread.

I'll be in the corner writing, and trying to ignore the spikes of pain as I move around. Standing up and sitting down doesn't hurt too much but the transition is a real killer.

We had light rain on and off all night. The morning is clear and sunny, but also cool and humid. I'll have to wait on the dew before I pick chiles and jalapenos.

The house smells of the melons waiting on the kitchen counter. I don't notice it so much outside the kitchen, but if I leave and come back I pick up the scent as soon as I open the door. I've picked all the melons I think I'll get (nineteen in two crops from one vine), but I'll leave the vines in place just in case there's time for two or three more to ripen.

Sorry to hear about the pain, CK. My wife is in a similar state.

I wrote 1250 words today! And finished a chapter.

Now I'm trying to talk my muse into writing about ghosts and ghouls, but she just wants to point out that I wrote a story about an angel of death yesterday, and that I chose to call young orcs goblins so I should be good on such stuff.

Hmmm... Guess I'll continue writing about orcs for now.
Garnish that Muses' wages! The Muse is supposed to work for you. Although they are a finicky lot and go on strike frequently. Hmmm. Cunundrum

Do you remember when the Captain, First Officer or other Flight Deck crew would come out during a flight and stroll the aisles talking to passengers?

Finishing up a story I promised to write years ago - it will be done very soon, but if this site isn't publishing stories, why bother? Will there be a Halloween contest?

Has anyone heard from Laurel?

@Laurel, mind if you give us a wave?

How're the kitties? You changed your AV away from the green eye.

We won't let NW's big kitty eat yours.

She published 284 stories today. That's substantially above the recent norm.

Why, yes, yes I do, saw it the other night when I was on Trans Global Airlines (TGA) flight Flight 45 to Room the other night.

Not the same effect.

Theaters aren't even the same now. They were one screen per building. One BIG screen.

Some of them were made for Cinerama's large curved screen, then converted to a flat screen.

Petroni's cigar was so big you could almost smell it.

People were rocking in their seat with him as he poured on the fuel for that last attempt.

Yeah, as I mentioned before, my adoptive father has been in theater exhibiter end of show business for most of his adult life. Therefore, I'm aware of the way things once were and aren't likely to be again.
