The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I seem to be avoiding acclimation. I actually take both, 12 hours apart, and my doc wholeheartedly agrees with this protocol. I ran out of one two weeks ago and thought I'd be okay on just one, and... nope... runny, stuffy, and sneezy (plus the other Seven Dwarves).

I don't know if any of you recall from early spring a year ago I was having problems with spontaneous nosebleeds (gushers!). This season we started the double antihistamine thing plus a humidifier next to the bed - no problems.

I'm trying to catch up on a month of not having time to weed in the vegetable garden. Cleaned out the green chile bed yesterday, and today I whacked down the grass, amaranth and prairie berries between the raised beds. That would have been easy if not for the melons spreading themselves all over the place and anchoring to the weeds in some places. They've grown into the gladiolas and the tomatoes. and they're starting to reach all the other beds, too.

Can't remember the last time I took an antihistamine. I don't like them, so the symptoms have to be bad before I'll even think about them.

Well, I'm finally back from vacation, only to find the A/C had failed while I was gone so the house was 88 degrees all night, so I didn't get enough sleep and feel absolutely wasted ...

Got the A/C fixed and spent the rest of the morning doing all the chores that hadn't been done in a week. Then I realized I forgot to start the coffee ...

So, finally, a bit late, I've got the coffee going. The teapot is hot and I ran down to the corner bakery to get some bagels and donuts which are on the counter. There's cream cheese for the bagels ...

I didn't get any writing done while I was gone and I probably won't get any done today but am looking forward to firing up the laptop and get going tomorrow ...

BTW: I've read 'Altered Carbon' and greatly recommend it. I also recommend the Netflix series which is excellent ...

Been busy with a bunch of non-writing things, but I just wanted to check to see which of us were in the Millennial or late Gen X age brackets:

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down

If that's stuck in your head for the next two days, we are automatically friends.

Branch made that movie totally watchable. :p

My finale for the Chain Story we began about a year ago has been accepted and will appear tomorrow, so I'm quite chuffed. Figuring out how to build on the five previous chapters, and end the story, in keeping with what the five previous authors had written, was a fascinating challenge and I'm rather pleased with my contribution.

I've also submitted a rant about crap sex toys to Reviews and Essays, which was a fun couple hours today, and is another category ticked off!

Is this for the Survivor challenge?
No - I've just been idly seeing how many categories I can manage since joining Lit, in particular since I managed to write a category I never thought I could (I/T).

I've been trying to translate a story and got a kind editor, but even though it's only 750 words in English, it turns out that while I can still read, speak and understand German pretty well, I haven't actually written more than a couple informal paragraphs in 30 years and it really shows! But I'm determined to tick that category off. After that I think it's just Celebs, Mind Control, Non-Consent, Mature and Toys/Masturbation to go. I've got a couple ideas for MC and NC which don't squick me, but there's so many other plot bunnies in the queue...

I've tried them and the nose sprays; none of them work as well as the Benadryl.
Benadryl? Gosh, Millie, there are much more effective OTC antihistamines now, they don't make you nearly as drowsy, and you only need to take them once a day. Try Claritin (loratadine) or Zyrtec (cetirizine). I don't recommend Allegra (fexofenadine) - it gives me nightmares. Really. It's a known side-effect. Antihistamines can mess with the brain, and other things.

One of the side-effects of getting old is pharmacy-level knowledge of medications. Firsthand. 😞

Everyone's body reacts differently to different meds. For instance, I can't take generic Tylenol Cold, they make me loopy and out of it, name brand is the only one that doesn't do that.

Welcome back Candy. Thanks for the treats.

Rainfall is back to normal, although the rural area just north of us could do with a bit more. Wet grass and black sandy soil and one diggy dog means muddy prints everywhere.

A friend gave me an idea for the summer comp, but I don't think I will be able to do it in time. Another one for the back burner.

Huzzah! The smoke cleared out, the front lawn is mown (moan?) and edged, the backyard had one pass with the mower set real high, and should get the final cut tomorrow. Grass in the studio courtyard is still a jungle and we need a machete to get to the hot tub. Tomorrow, too.

But wait! There's more! Fencing crew is scheduled for Tuesday! How long has it been trying to get that done? March? February?

First warm coffee in weeks. All iced recently.

After running for most of 10 days straight, AC hasn't been on for close to 48 hours.

Longest stretch of days above 75 Dewpoint on record. Supposed to get to 63 by dawn.

A beautiful cool morning, the first in a while, and I'm hoping the birds will come back after a week of empty bird feeders.

I've got a fresh pot of coffee going and the teapot is whistling. There are blueberry filled donuts and cherry tarts on the counter.

I'll be over in the corner working on my new story, trying to remember where I had left off before my vacation. Hopefully I can figure it out without having an abrupt transition in the story ...

BTW: A fish boil is performed in a huge cast iron pot outdoors over a wood fire where they put the potatoes and onions in first, then the fish and finally the corn on the cob. Then, when the food is cooked, fuel oil is injected into the wood fire to flare up and boil the pot over to carry off all of the fish oil. Then the food is taken from the pot and passed out to all of the participants.

For some reason, that reminded me of Stone Soup.
