I’ve never heard of any of them. I took a quick look and total blank. Dorothy Sayer is vaguely there somewhere but that’s it. Looks interesting tho.

Chloe, you definitely have some fun reading ahead of you!

Once you're moved, unpacked, and get your backlog of writing and work out of the way, anyhow - I know you're currently just a wee bit overloaded with things to do.

Unfortunately, due to the UK/US stupid copyright extensions (Sayers died over 60 years ago, fer crying out loud!) even on Kindle they're a bit pricy (though I think some are/were available from Gutenberg CA or AU). As in "you can get all the video adaptations from Amazon for rather less than buying all the books".

Should be a fair number available used, though

I'd suggest dipping your toe in with the short stories first, to see if you like the flavor. I love the novels, but (IMHO) the later ones are far better than the earlier. There's a pretty decent overview on Wikipedia, if you're curious.

They're very much period pieces these days. Which may be a large part of their appeal, and why people love them today. I remember having an interesting conversation with my hotel's bartender one night 20+ years back when I was working in Cambridge - turned out she was also a fan, and she was pointing out how the fictional settings overlapped with the actual local geography and history.

And yes, I could definitely see Lord St. George (Wimsey's feckless but charming nephew, heir to the Duchy of Denver - circa "Gaudy Night" or a bit later) being charmed and happily managed by one of your heroines, to both their benefits.

Irish coffee on a perfect summer evening in New England.

Got my two stories submitted, and now I just get to sit back and cope with the shitty TV. Probably I'll just read a book.

Oh my dear Chloe, you Have Missed a few treats;
firstly, look HERE.

In the meantime, is there any coffee left please ?

Morning HP and the rest of the regulars. Most of which haven't been around to regularly.

Fresh coffee is available. As for treats, I think I want cupcakes.

My education in old young adult books is very lacking I'm finding out. So what did I end up writing for mainstream? I'll give ya two guesses and I don't think you'll need both.

Coffee and bacon. My tummy is happy. I'll scrounge around for cupcakes. I may have forgotten to get them at the store.

I'm trying to rouse myself for some quality writing time this morning. I have an unstructured day ahead so there should be plenty of time for it.

Unstructured seems to lead down so many rabbit holes. But it is a lot better than nothing. You would think, being retired would give you tons of time. Yes and no. Yes, there is a lot of time but time has a way of filling itself. The trick is to trick time into thinking it is doing you a favor.

Evening coffee is available.

Supper was BBQ spare ribs with potato salad and ranch style beans.

One story finished today and words added to several more.

Thanks, TxRad.

Been a sad day. Had to put our old cat down today - 17 years old, and the sweetest cat we've ever owned, but she had a stroke last week and couldn't care for herself at all. At least she wasn't in pain, and still purred for us when we petted her. We sat with her in the vets office and stroked her as she went to sleep for the last time. Even when you know it's the right decision, it hurts.

Moving around helps some, though. Got back from a hike with M'lady a few minutes ago - dinner will be steak and salad with lots of homegrown tomatoes. Debating whether to go with beer or open a bottle of wine with it.

Now to sit down to add to my current story. I'm on the home stretch now, but still a ways to go.

Sympathies.

I’m not really a pet person, but my condolences all the same.

Seventeen is a good age. We've had many cats, and one of my wife's oldest friends is a vet tech. When a cat's time has come, she sits down with us and gives the cat the injection. The cat usually falls asleep on my wife's lap or in her arms where it's warm and safe.

I'd go with a good red wine, but I'm like that.

My very Mexican neighbors had a party tonight, but you could hardly tell. They had a bouncy house for the kids and a taco truck pulled into the yard for dinner. The men in their boots and cowboy hats stood beside the taco truck and laughed while they passed kids from arm to arm. The women, as I've come to expect, were not to be seen. They were probably inside with the youngest.

There was no music. The neighbors have two semi tractors and at least one trailer. The son drives them and the Dad does the maintenance. I'll hear Dad in the morning singing to himself while he works on the trailer or on one of the tractors. Dad sings louder than their party music.

Well; it's actually DRY and bright !
My washing will be OK, then

Any coffee left please?

Thanks to both of you.

NotWise, that's how it went down for us - she fell asleep peacefully with both of us stroking her one last time.

And yes, I went with red wine, too.

The departure of my dog was the cause of my Grandson seeing my tears.
He was so surprised he went and told his Gramma.

Time for a brew, I think

Fresh coffee for the evening crew.

I've been held captive by HM &HG most of the day. I'm not complaining believe me. :) They are both napping and I've escaped to the office. They will be along shortly to put me back into captivity. If not, I'll go back in the bedroom and climb in between them.

Sinday is a great day.

The pain when they go is the price we pay for the joy they bring us.

And yes, I've cried every time we lost a beloved pet. I don't even want to imagine what it's like for those who've lost a child.

Been there, done that; it really is no fun.

If anything, joining this forum has shown me that I've barely even lived yet. It's not often I talk to people two or three times my age, and it's been a pretty interesting experience. Although sometimes I just have hardly anything to contribute to the conversation.

Oh and sympathies, Javahead. I've only lost a bird so far, and a pretty anti-social one at that, but that still hurt. Can only imagine what an actually affectionate and loving pet would feel like.

It's good to know there are grasshoppers who understand that there is nothing new in human behaviour, and the expression, "Been there, done that" can sometimes mean, "Don't go there, don't do that" :).

ARE YOU %@&^!!! LISTENING TO ME?!".

Fixed it for you.

Sad, but so true.

My office was broken into overnight, as were all the occupied offices on the top floor of this building. They rifled through files, moved an old bottle of hydrochloric acid, tore into some un-mailed mail, but didn't seem to find anything they wanted (probably cash).

Now I'm sitting here waiting to get the all-clear from the police so we can start cleaning up.

Hi, newbie here

Hi all, as a newbie I put my toe in the water with due deference, but I do need some coffee - happy to help wash up.

My signature has a link to my stories, been enjoying here, and nice to meet you all.

Pix :)
