Personally, I'm uplifted by the challenge it's given me to improve and tighten up my writing. And it's had the added benefit of introducing me to a bevy of really nice people on this thread.

I should properly reply: thank you! I'm quite pleased in how it's been received. Truth be told, the idea came to me after a very emotional day for me. My wife has dementia, though it's nowhere near as bad as presented in my story. But many small parts of it are taken from my life. Including the rose and the love of birds. Hence the reason for my tagline of it being very personal. Also, I wrote it in about an hour while in tears.

Give it a try, kick out a quick story and pare it down to 750. Don't expect a 4.9, most readers don't understand what the event is all about. This event isn't for them, it's for us.

A 4.5 is a very good score for the 750-ers.
