Thatcher is dead.

Of course not, right wingers are renowned for glorying in their ignorance. It's why The Mail and The Sun stay in business.

Yep. from now on I'll read the Mirror. Thats your new bogeyman now isn't it. The Daily Mail. Maybe you can have a party in 100 yrs time when all the current Mail readers are dead. I reckon you'll do it, the hate will motivate.

You have two different faces don't you.....

No I don’t think so.
I had not accused you of ranting so it was not necessary to go public and acknowledge that you weren’t. Nevertheless I took the trouble to pm you to say that my earlier post clearly referred to the ‘rabid rantings of some of the people on here’. I accepted you have a different view. In passing I mentioned how difficult it is to have an intelligent conversation about this subject. You only have to read this thread to see that this is true.

I was trying to have an intelligent, non ranting conversation with the young poster to whom I addressed my remarks. The film I referred to reflected the very real situation that I saw at that time, as I lived in Sheffield for several years and knew families who were fractured by the financial and social damage of long term unemployment which is caused when the main employment source of an area is closed. So, contrary to your assertion, the 'play' was, like most true art, an honest reflection of a reality, in this instance of the privations that some areas of the country suffered. Hence my objection to your dismissive tone.

But no matter. What's done is done.

Morrissey's Scathing Letter to the Public About Margaret Thatcher

I have sometimes wondered why B-list celebrities have a need to enlighten us on their opinions about current issues, and why their fans think that their ability to play a guitar or whatever, means that they are thus founts of wisdom.

I may have stumbled across the answer. Perhaps it’s a service they provide for their fans to save them the trouble of having to think for themselves.

I am not dismissive about the very real hurt that the mining communities suffered as a result of the pit closures. And I defer to your opinion that it reflects reality because you have both lived in an effected community and seen the film.

BUT, I cannot subscribe to the view, widely expressed here, that the blame for this sad state of affairs lies solely with Margaret Thatcher. Arthur Scargill was also responsible, as indeed were the miners themselves, who by their own apathy, allowed him and his cronies to gain control of their union, from which they waged political war against the elected Government.

Yes

I think Octavian is giving a balanced view our coutry was in a mess before she came to power and she did a lot of good. Unfortunately a lot of bad things too and went about it the wrong way.

I am not a Thatcher fan but would never celebrate anyones death, that shows us up in a very bad way.

I read The Independant and not any of the gutter press mentioned here previously.

Her family? I wonder how much compassion Mark has for the families of the people his arms deals help murder. Or the families of those murdered in the anti-democratic coups he helps fund. Do fuck off, her offspring are as evil and fucked up as she was.

So basically you're saying 'they deserve to suffer'? And who exactly are you to choose that punishment for them?

As a person, I don't feel too strongly about her - as I say, she was a memory by the time I was old enough to understand anything, but she is dead and its pretty disgraceful how people have behaved in regards to that. I think it was the death of Gaddafi where there was footage of people having parties and celebrating, and that left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Maybe its my background, and having dealt with cadavers and recently passed patients, but the idea of ANY death being celebrated is just disgusting.

I'm not having a party to celebrate her death, but as I disliked the woman when she was alive, I cannot in all conscience mourn her passing.

I know that you are too young to remember her, but when she was in her prime and in power, she was capable of sneering vitriol that far exceeded the tone of anything I've seen here. Don't feel sorry for her in that respect because she shrugged off far worse when she was PM. She overrode anyone who disagreed with her, and if anyone in her own party suggested that she might be going too far in her policies they were scornfully called wet, to the point of the 'Wets' becoming a subset of the Conservative party. Eventually it was her inability to see that her policies were too extreme and her refusal to listen to anyone else's point of view that made even her own party turn in her and force her out of power in a humiliating manner.

Yes, by the end, she was a sick old lady who will be mourned by her family. But if you want to get a really true indication of life lived in communities that she destroyed, can I suggest you watch Brassed Off, in particular the speech that Pete Postlethwaite makes at the end. It is truly tragic and heartbreaking, but regrettably that's what actually happened.

I fully understand that my age is against me having a proper opinion on the subject, but as I said above, death shouldn't be celebrated in my opinion, no matter who it is. It doesn't have to be mourned - if I mourned every cadaver and every patient then I'd probably be insane by now, but a celebration is just too much.

Yes, they deserve to suffer. And I'm me, a person that lived in the North of England through the horror that was her premiership.

Cracking post this.

Whilst I wouldn't actually choose to go to one of these parties myself, I am glad the old fucker has popped her clogs (obviously, cos I started the thread!) and prior to this I don't think I've made a political comment on Lit whilst I've been here (other than agreeing with Hobbit she ought to pop her clogs soon) so I don't think I'm your typical misogynistic, leftie, unwashed, Blair-loving moron or whatever other labels have been thrown around in here.

But the area I live in was predominantly mining at one time, my Dad for a spell worked the pits and my ex brother in law all his life from 15 years old (he's just finished at Maltby pit actually) so people have good reason to feel so strongly when they've seen the effects close up in their families and communities.

Not sure about the family mourning bit either...she died alone in a hotel room. I think that also speaks volumes about her as a human being. Mind you, those pair she spawned are fucking twats.

If you read the thread, you will see that I have already given my opinion on this point.

I note that have lived through this 'horror' as you put it. It is sad that you appear to be so bitter after what, 20 odd years.
I am not making any political point here, but surely for your own sake you have to let go at some time.
