Thanksgiving Dinner

I laughed out loud.

With you my friend, with you. Not at your travails.
There comes a point when it's not even fun to put the effort into it. It's not appreciated, or even liked. It's "weird" somehow to cook authentic dishes. Not that strawberry pie is authentic to Thanksgiving, but point being, they want slop, give them slop! I just can't do it.
🙊 Thought and prayers, and no other leftovers. :rose:

Although, I must admit that we do the canned cranberry sauce. I’m not sure why, other than tradition, because no one eats it.

I gave up prying for them long ago, but thank you, your sentiment is appreciated! The gravey is what blows my mind! Who the hell taught them to make it like that? Some turkey fat and corn starch?? Every year I try and make it early enough to at least offer to make the gravey. It's already made. I'm sure it was make a few days before hand with a couple of cubes of chicken bullion. Last year, it could of held a jello mold. Maybe their making a turkey aspic and we're all too dumb to figure it out!

Family......

Immediate at that. After Mom died, all decent food hopes got buried with her.
lol lololol

i'm sorry. i feel for you, i do. :)

my ham was overcooked, too... partly from when i was trying to get the top crispy before and then--having sat it in an inch of chicken stock and covered with foil to try to redress that, with plans on recrisping the top just before serving--when all of a sudden the oven had to be whacked up to almost twice the temperature to cook more things brought over but not cooked and reheating the other prepared foods!
edible, still a good taste, but definitely on the drier side of wonderful  i have decided i don't like sharing my oven with other people  that extra cooking was mainly a dessert that could have cooked when the meat and other stuff came out and we were eating that. never mind, a good time was had by all, regardless.

No one touches my oven! I will cook it all myself! I'm kind of a kitchen tyrant. If they even dared to touch any of my perfectly honed knives, there will be blood!

Hams are always touchy. You'd think a pre cooked hunk of pig would be easy. Cause really, all you're doing is warming it through right? I've fucked up so many hams that I've sworn them off forever! I have a heritage ham in my deep freeze. I like it there. I can always say "I only buy heritage meat", and never cook it so I never fuck it up. What a waste. I'm glad your ham was savable! They aren't cheap. Especially heritage breeds... :)

What's for dinner this coming Thursday?

I'll be smoking/grilling a spatchcocked turkey for the main meal. For breakfast, I will be cooking up Kowalski's kielbasa and paleo blueberry pancakes. There will be wild lingonberry sauce for the turkey and for turkey sandwiches on black Friday. Others get to choose the sides and dessert.

The kids made dinner this year.

Turkey. Lots of Brussel sprouts. Sweet potato mash.

It was pretty good. It was a lowkey event. Just the kids and inlaws.

Take joy in the journey, or in this case the cooking. None of them got the joy that I'm sure you did from seeing that crust flake perfectly.

My third (second?) brother's second wife is definitely a keeper; that woman can cook. The turkey was perfectly prepared. She generally likes to cook it breast down so it's moister but the kids insisted they wanted a perfectly browned turkey so she went that route and it was still just as good as her breast down version.

Still need to get her recipient for cranberry-onion-jalepeno salsa/dip.

I do for sure. Seems everyone else stopped caring at some point. However, the cheez whiz concoction has made it to the table years ago. Gift of an ex sister in law. A whole generation of the nieces and nephews grew up with it. It's some nasty shit, but it's a must have. My kids have always known better. I raised food critics, bordering on snobs.

My kids are beer snobs, food snobs, coffee snobs, and whisky snobs. One is particularly talented in the kitchen. Neither knows what canned spaghetti tastes like.

This is not a bad thing. My girls have no palate for those thing either, it's kind of a shame. Sometimes a can of spaghettios can hit the spot.

Sometimes, the only food that's available to eat isn't all that tasty. And, being hungry sucks.

Doing American Thanksgiving tomorrow. All the traditional stuff and a big turkey, which will go in a brine shortly.
Brine + slow roast = not dry

As far as ham, we rarely do it. But when I have, just toss it in a crock pot with a little water and a can of beer. Slow cook.

i love me a good sharp knife. H is dangerous with 'em, though--has me on tenterhooks when he gets a hold of one!

well i already share it with my mother-in-law, but we mostly cook separate days... when a beloved guest arrives with stuff they wanted to bring but hadn't had time to cook, it's adapt or be damned. the ham was from the fresh-butchered hog and had brined for a week then roasted, so should have only needed that gentle warming through, allowing it to moisten in the stock, then crisped top under the grill. such a crying shame.

Thankee.

I've put in a hard day's work for the yard. I'll definitely have room. :D
enjoy!

just made the cream topping for the extra baked cheesecake... this time i flavoured the cream with some eggnog as well as dark chocolate powder. before it was just regular cream and melted bitter chocolate, so got a good thick 'set' to it. this time it's more airy, thickened but not heavy like before, and way too much for the topping. i've put the rest into a container in the freezer and will go stir it in a minute, to make some sort of gelato/mousse/icecream identity-crisised thing. :D
