Some may have noticed the new feature at Lit that allows you to hear whatever verification code might be needed. It's something few of us will ever need. But for those who do, it's a very big deal that makes posting on Lit a real possibility.

To "read" what's on a computer screen, many blind folks use a high-class character recognition/speech system. However, none of those could cope with the squiggly lines used in verification codes.

That little noticed speech option means these folks can now post here at Literotica. I have no idea what it took to get the feature up and running. But as someone who was once blind for about a year (I'm now kinda, hard-of-seeing) I appreciate what Laurel and Manu have done.

Many thanks, you two.

I poke my cursor everywhere, so I noticed it and tried it. It's a good idea.

I'm pretty unobservant when it comes to things like that, but well done Laurel and Manu. From what I've seen people who have visual problems seem to be restricted to large print Mills and Boon books or enlarged / braille versions of Charles Dickens novels. It's about time they had access to some quality erotica. It's actually made me think about doing some audio stories.

I didn't notice that feature, but it's good to see someone saying "thank you" to them no matter the reason. We owe them thanks for the work they've done in general that we've benefitted from (even those who've said so haven't really said it enough, IMO).

The constant complaints about how long it's taking to post is starting to piss me off. How do we keep forgetting that it's a free site? And they're doing all this work while we're bullshitting in the AH and waiting to count votes...

*shrug*

Oh, well. Prattle concluded.

Shame-faced confession: When I first noticed "Hear the characters" I was reading an unfamiliar author and thought she had added audio to her story.

:D

Let's see a show of hands for everybody who thought the same thing:

Me neither.

I agree it's a fabulous idea.

But I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know what it was for. Thanks for the explanation, RF! Not thinking with much sensitivity these days, I guess.

So: is there a function whereby the blind can "hear" the stories or do they need a reader for that?

Softouch,

There's some fairly sophisticated character recognition technology out there that will "read" text. Some blind folks who are very good at braille, most aren't, prefer printing it out in braille and then "reading" that. All of these have trouble with diagrams, maps, photos, or squiggly lines like those used for the characters in verification.

<blushing but raising my hand high>

Thank you, Laurel and Manu  .

For everything you do, for everything you are. We all appreciate your efforts, whether we come out and say so or not. I personally am thrilled to have a place to be; to have a place to learn and grow as an author; and to have a place that I can just be me, without worry that I might offend someone.

We all  both of you!

Thanks Manu and Laurel!!!!

We appreciate all you do for us and making the site easily accessible for those with handicaps.

Laurel, I would have put your name first but you haven't answered my e-mail in almost a week now, but I am patiently waiting.

Oh, and thank you Lit gods and goddesses for what you do from Mt. Olitus!

Luck,

Yui

Lisa,

If you really did send an e-mail, that may be your problem. A PM is much more likely to get her attention than an e-mail. Best I understand the stiuation, e-mails can get lost in all the spam, while PM's are just from Lit folks.

So did I lol... shhh ;)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!!!!

I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

I just sent Manu a PM before I read you suggesting it, but the last couple times I talked to Laurel e-mail she would answer me fast.

Yui, I think it is Mt. Allofphus.

Oh, bless you. Bless you. This either means that my reaction was normal, or that you are pathetic. Either way, I'm not alone.

Hear, hear! I put my name to your praise.

Thanks to you as well, RF, for the explanation. I'd tried the clever little gizmo for fun but hadn't figured out why it was needed for someone who had 'read' that far.

Doh!

Occular Albinism

Also if people have some degree of this disease it is usually hard to see certain colors and the images can tend to blend together making one kind of dull blob. Think of those cards where the person held up a card with spots and a number that were used to test how color blind a person was. Hearing the code makes it possible for those people (like my fiancee) that do have trouble with certain colors due to Occular Albinism. :catroar:
