Yep! He was testing the waters in asking you out.
When you didn't pounce right on it, he turned it into a social thing.
What do YOU want?
Time alone with him? Or having other people around?
If you want other people, just say... great idea!

After backtracking posts, I totally agree with Collar. When you hesitated he tossed in the group to take pressure off, and to make sure it didn't turn awkward.

Still, you can backtrack it like she suggested. Or, you could do the group thing and see how it goes. You can always rope him off from the herd at the end of the evening.
