Several hours after the attack began, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a TV address that at least 39 had been killed and 150 were injured in the Westgate Premier Shopping Mall as a hazy hostage situation dragged on. The dead, the president said, included members of his own family.

“We’ve overcome terrorist attacks before. We’ve fought courageously & defeated them within and outside our borders. We will defeat them again,” Kenyatta said.

Al-Shabaab quickly took responsibility for the noontime attack, confirming initial witness reports that the gunmen spoke Somali or Arabic. “HSM has on numerous occasions warned the #Kenyan government that failure to remove its forces from Somalia would have severe consequences,” the terror group said, promising to release recordings later of the attack.

“Only Kuffar were singled out for this attack. All Muslims inside #Westgate were escorted out by the Mujahideen before beginning the attack,” Al-Shabaab added.

Muslim activists on Twitter cried foul at this claim, insignificant at best because Kenya is 83 percent Christian and just over 11 percent Muslim. Some photos from the scene showed a handful of Muslim shoppers hiding and fleeing along with everyone else. But a witness told BBC that some Muslims were allowed to leave with their hands up as the gunmen claimed they were there to “rescue ” them, then shot two other people.

Al-Shabaab recently released a PR video targeted at Somali-Americans in Minnesota, trying to lure them to jihad as more than two dozen have already done so through the state’s “terror pipeline.”

Israeli advisers are helping Kenya formulate a strategy to end a siege at a Nairobi shopping mall where Islamist militants have killed at least 59 people and are holding hostages, an Israeli security source said on Sunday.

"There are Israeli advisers helping with the negotiating strategy, but no Israelis involved in any imminent storming operation," said the source, who declined to be identified.

The source said only a "handful" of Israelis, "purely in an advisory role," were on scene at the upscale Westgate shopping center, which has several Israeli-owned outlets and is frequented by expatriates and Kenyans.

An Israeli source in Nairobi said all Israelis who were in the mall at the time of the attack had made it out safely, with the last three rescued overnight.

There were conflicting reports from other security sources in Nairobi about the part Israel was playing.

One Kenyan security source, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters that the Israeli military was involved in the operation, while a private security official also said they were helping comb the mall.

But the Kenyan Interior Minister insisted it was a national operation, despite offers of foreign support.

The attack by Al-Qaida-linked militants at the Nairobi wounded 175, in addition to those killed, Kenya's interior cabinet secretary said earlier Sunday.

Multiple barrages of gunfire erupted Sunday morning from inside the building where there is a hostage standoff with Islamic extremists nearly 24 hours after they attacked using grenades and assault rifles.

"The priority is to save as many lives as possible," Joseph Lenku said, reassuring the families of the hostages in the upscale Westgate mall. Kenyan forces have already rescued about 1,000 people, he said.

King: In Kenya, War on Terror Is Coming Full Circle

Representative Pete King of New York raised the alarm about yesterday’s deadly attack on a Western mall on Kenya yesterday, calling it a “very sophisticated attack” and saying that the organization that claimed responsibility, Somalia’s al-Shabaab, is an ”extremely dangerous, very well-trained” organization that’s “one of the few al-Qaeda affiliates which actually has actively recuited here in the United States.

“There’s 40 to 50 Somali Americans that have gone from the United States to Somalia to be trained,” he explained in an interview on ABC’s This Week.

Noting that one of the first major Islamist-terror attacks on an American target were the 1998 al-Qaeda bombings on two embassies also in East Africa, the Long Island Republican said, “”It’s almost as if the terror war is coming full-cycle.”

Former Bush national-security aide Fran Townsend noted later on that many of the Somali-Americans who’ve joined hail from one particular state, Minnesota, and that the FBI has been involved in closely monitoring the situation for a wile.

The killers were all Muslims; Responsibility for the attack was claimed by a militant Muslim organization and the same source as you cited describes the killers as profiling to target only non-Muslims. How can you possibly say it was not radical Islam?

Unless, of course, you consider Islam to be a religion of peace, incapable of doing such a thing.
